Job Summary
The Critical Facilities Engineer operates, manages, maintains, and repairs HVAC systems, critical and non-critical power systems, plumbing, fire control and suppression, roofing, and exterior grounds. The role assists with repairs, installations, inspections, and monitoring of building systems—including plumbing, fire suppression, safety systems, and the Building Monitoring System (BMS)—while following established operating procedures. Working with limited daily supervision, the technician partners with senior team members and service providers to support vendor work, maintain accurate site documentation, respond to on‑site incidents, complete work orders, and assist with infrastructure projects.
Through collaboration, problem‑solving, and attention to detail, this role helps maintain a safe, efficient, and well‑functioning facility environment.
- Performs moderately difficult preventative and corrective maintenance checks on‑site to facility components
- Performs moderately difficult repairs, maintenance, installations and on‑site inspections to facility systems, supports energy efficiency measures
- Monitors the Building Monitoring System (BMS) and resolves moderate alarm issues using standard operating procedures
- Operates and maintains plumbing, fire suppression, and safety systems
- Operates critical infrastructures under the supervision of more senior technical staff
- Receives little instruction on daily work, with general instructions on newly introduced assignments
- Supports the work approval process for service providers on moderately difficult maintenance work, including briefing, daily work, and final review
- Ensures vendor maintenance activities are carried out per Equinix’s standard operating procedures
- In cooperation with vendors, supports modifications to technical files for plants and equipment, keeping files and builds up‑to‑date
- Performs moderately difficult site logs for permits, such as Maintenance Operation Protocols (MOPs) and scripts
- Identifies single points of failure (SPOFs) and makes recommendations
- Responds to all moderately difficult on‑site incidents, including failures, problems and delays
- Uses extensive understanding of operating procedures to support on‑site administration
- Completes routine work requests and circuit installations
- Troubleshoots and maintains office equipment; supports auxiliary equipment and machines with problem solving and repairs to minimize downtime
- Makes minor changes to mechanical, electrical and specialized systems as directed
- Carries out infrastructure projects
- Collaborates with others to resolve moderately difficult facility incidents
- Effectively collaborates within the department, may mentor team members on general maintenance activities
- Provides stakeholders with inventory needs to maintain optimal stock levels of critical parts and equipment
- May recommend infrastructure projects
12‑hour night shift. 48 hours one week, 36 hours next week – rotating.
Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training, certification, or coursework is a plus
- 2+ years of experience in HVAC
- 2+ years experience in facilities maintenance, building operations, or a related technical environment
- Basic working knowledge of facility systems such as mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire suppression, or safety systems
- Ability to perform preventive and corrective maintenance tasks using standard operating procedures
- Familiarity with work orders, site documentation, logs, or maintenance protocols (training provided as needed)
- Comfortable working with vendors and following established processes to support on‑site maintenance activities
- Ability to work independently on routine tasks while collaborating effectively with team members
- Willingness to learn, take guidance from senior technicians, and support infrastructure projects as assigned
- Basic computer skills and ability to learn systems such as Building Monitoring Systems (BMS)
