Position: Concrete Worker Finisher (03-24)

Concrete Finisher

Under general supervision, the Concrete Finisher is a journey-level position that performs a variety of semi‑skilled to skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, or repair of sidewalks, curbs, gutters, catch basins, storm drains, and streets. This position is responsible for laying out, forming, and finishing concrete construction projects within the street maintenance division, and performs other related duties as required.

NOTE: This position will close upon receipt of a sufficient number of applications and may close at any time.

Salary is non‑negotiable within the range listed above and is based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications.

Examples of Duties
  • Break up and remove damaged concrete, remove tree roots, fill and perform grading, repair sprinkler system layouts, construct shoring braces, and prepare and replace all surfaces during project work.
  • Read and interpret plans, blueprints, sketches, and specifications; lay out jobs; and set out concrete forms.
  • Grind concrete, deliver project supplies such as basic asphalt, lumber, and related tools and equipment.
  • Maintain, repair catch basins, culverts, and concrete block walls; perform general carpentry, brick work, and color stamping as required for the project.
  • Spread and finish concrete; strip forms, backfill, and otherwise clean and restore work site.
  • Operate a variety of equipment and use hand tools in the completion of assigned tasks; ensure equipment and tools are maintained in good operating condition and follow established safety practices and procedures.
  • Assist in the performance of other street maintenance tasks.
  • Answer emergency calls as needed and assist other divisions and agencies in taking appropriate action.
Physical, Mental and Environmental Working Conditions

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movements. Near and far vision are required when inspecting work and operating equipment. Lifting, carrying, and pushing tools, equipment, and supplies weighing 50 pounds or more is required. Incumbents work outdoors in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold, and in confined spaces.

Incumbents may use cleaning and mixing chemicals that may expose them to fumes or airborne particles, and may be exposed to mechanical, plumbing, and/or electrical hazards. Work also requires use of power and noise‑producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles, and frequent interruptions. Incumbents may be required to respond to after‑hours emergency call‑outs and perform routine standby duties.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for a Concrete Finisher. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess the equivalent of two years of general public works construction and maintenance experience that includes experience in performing concrete construction or repair.

License/Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class B California driver's license.
