Plans and supervises the work of assistant shop foreman, mechanics, helpers, and other related personnel in the repair and maintenance of buses and related equipment

  • Plans and assigns work to mechanics, helpers, and related personnel;
    Schedules workload priorities
  • Inspects work in process and upon completion as performed by mechanics and other personnel to ensure that proper standards of repair work are maintained
  • Inspects tools and equipment for condition and to ensure proper use
  • Performs emergency road service or assigns mechanics to such service
  • Coordinates and monitors the servicing, lubrication, tire repair, and cleaning of bus/automotive equipment
  • Maintains the safety and security of the workplace
  • Leads and instructs mechanics in the repair and reconditioning of vehicles, other standard and specialized machinery and equipment
  • Observes performance of subordinates in inspection, overhaul, repair, and modification of equipment
  • Monitors service and inspections for all vehicles and submits appropriate report
  • Esures parts and supplies are ordered, received, and distributed
  • Maintains all inventory procedures involving shop equipment, supplies, and parts
  • Reviews all defects discovered by the bus driver and resolves appropriately
  • Completes work orders and ensures that parts and related information are listed
  • Ensures all federal, state, and local mandates are met for inspection and repair of school bus fleet
  • Ensures office and shop coverage in case of absences
  • Maintains the shop in a clean and orderly fashion
  • Establishes and maintains a positive and productive working relationship with drivers, shop personnel, office staff, and other District employees
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator
Required Education

Associate’s Degree required or equivalent experience (2 years of similar work level experience = 1 year of college); A combination of experience and education may be used to meet the Associate’s Degree requirement in a related field or In lieu of degree, Supervisor certification with Vehicle Maintenance Concentration earned through National Association for Pupil transportation (NAPT) may be considered

Certification/Licensure

Valid certificate(s) in Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician or ASE Master School Bus technician required

Valid Class B Commercial Driver License with S, P and air brake endorsements required

Must have an excellent driving record

Experience Qualifications

Minimum 5 years of experience in truck, automotive repair, and/or school bus repair work required;
Experience in a supervisory or lead role preferred

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Computer skills required to include diagnostics for diesel and gas vehicles, troubleshooting, and record keeping
  • Skills in fleet maintenance software required
  • Must be able to successfully manage multiple tasks, projects and responsibilities
  • Must be able to collaborate effectively with District personnel, the general public, and work with diverse groupsof people
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
Working Conditions
  • Hazardous physical conditions (mechanical parts, electrical current, etc.)
  • Atmospheric conditions (exposure to fumes, odors, dust, grease)
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures
Physical Demands
  • Exerting up to 100lbs force occasionally and/or up to 50lbs force frequently
  • Exerting up to 20lbs force constantly
  • Requires balancing, stooping, kneeling, bending, reaching, grasping, feeling, repetitive motions
