Overview

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) seeks an experienced Embedded Software Engineer for a full‑time research faculty position in the Applied Systems Lab (ASL) Autonomy Technology Transition Division (ATTD). The role focuses on autonomous unmanned aircraft programs and defense research projects.

Job Purpose

The Embedded Real‑Time Software Engineer will design, implement, test, and maintain high‑performance embedded systems software that operates on limited‑resource hardware. Responsibilities include interfacing with real‑time operating systems, managing hardware resources, architecting low‑latency solutions, and applying safety, security, and open‑system frameworks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, test, and develop software packages to meet system requirements.
  • Develop and maintain scripts to support embedded software development processes.
  • Establish and enforce embedded software development processes.
  • Apply expertise in embedded systems to define requirements and develop designs within hardware limitations.
  • Author technical reports and presentations for moderate‑to‑high complexity projects.
  • Compile and prepare final report deliverables from research team contributions.
  • Lead or contribute to white papers and proposals.
  • Provide technical leadership to development teams and verify compliance with embedded development processes.
  • Design, architect, and support high‑security, sensitive, or classified systems.
  • Serve as a subject‑matter expert for software engineering tools and technologies.
  • Manage the overall codebase, review pull requests, merge branches, and enforce code‑quality standards.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Lead the software development of military embedded systems applications.
  • Manage and review overall software requirements and design.
  • Create software development estimates.
  • Deliver technical presentations.
  • Ensure software complies with military, safety, and security standards.
Required

Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience developing software for complex systems using disciplined approaches and processes.
  • Experience estimating and managing software development through project lifecycle.
  • Experience integrating and/or testing unmanned autonomous system capabilities.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ programming.
  • Experience with bash and Python scripting.
  • Experience developing software on Linux for Linux‑target systems.
  • Experience leading sponsored research projects and stakeholder interactions.
  • Proven ability to facilitate collaboration among research personnel, government, and industry stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Secret clearance.
  • Experience providing technical leadership for complex, high‑value engineering programs.
  • Experience designing architectures, requirements, behavior allocation, and interface design for autonomous systems.
  • Experience developing and fielding autonomous systems or solutions.
  • Experience with complex, software‑intensive military unmanned air systems (UAS).
  • Experience with autonomous unmanned aircraft systems (UAS/UAV).
  • Experience with open systems architecture frameworks such as FACE™ and OMS/UCI.
Travel Requirements

10–25% travel.

Education and Experience

Required qualifications are aligned with the Research Faculty Extension Professional ranks. Candidates must meet the following experience thresholds based on degree level:

  • 14 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree.
  • 12 years of related experience with a Master’s degree.
  • 9 years of related experience with a Ph.D.
U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Candidates must be U.S. citizens due to federal research contracts.

Security Clearance

Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain an active security clearance (active Secret clearance is preferred).
