Studio Design System Engineer – Role Overview
As a Staff Design System Engineer at Pilot, you will build, maintain, and grow a production-ready UI system that spans Figma, Storybook, and Vue code. You will bridge design and engineering, ensuring design intent is faithfully executed and components remain scalable, accessible, and easy to adopt across Product, Marketing, and AI-enabled experiences.
What You Will Own- Authority over the design system in Figma, Storybook, and production code.
- Stewardship of Storybook as the ultimate source of truth for UI components.
- Alignment between design intent and shipped UI.
- Component quality, consistency, and scalability across the product platform.
- Fast prototyping support for the design team, including AI tools.
- Extend the design system to support all product, marketing, and AI-ready experiences from a single shared foundation.
- Partner daily with product designers to shape components early, never retroactively.
- Collaborate with frontend engineers to ensure easy adoption and extension of components.
- Build and maintain reusable, accessible UI components in Vue.
- Translate design system decisions into clean, documented, production‑ready components.
- Keep Figma, Storybook, and code in sync and actively close gaps.
- Evolve the design system to be AI‑ready, enabling Rapid Prototyping.
- 7+ years of software engineering experience.
- Strong frontend development skills, including modern CSS.
- Deep experience owning or working with a design system.
- Hands‑on experience with Storybook in a production environment.
- Strong design sensibility and the ability to challenge design decisions.
- Comfort acting as the bridge between design and engineering.
- Experience with AI‑assisted design and development workflows.
- Familiarity with intent‑driven UI concepts is a plus.
- Clear communication skills and a bias toward practical solutions.
- This position is remote; candidates must be based in the U.S. (CA, GA, NY, NC, TN, TX, WA).
- Base pay range: $185,000 – $313,000 (most remote locations) or $231,000 – $313,000 (San Francisco, CA and New York City, NY).
