Emory University's National Biomedical Research Center (ENBRC) is looking for a Lead Software Engineer to lead a small software development team responsible for designing, developing, modernizing, and supporting custom applications that support biomedical research, animal resource management, and business operations across the center. This individual will serve as both a technical leader and hands-on developer, managing a team of three software engineers while collaborating directly with researchers, veterinarians, administrators, and business stakeholders to gather requirements and deliver scalable software solutions.
The Lead Software Engineer will oversee the full software development lifecycle, including architecture, development, testing, deployment, code reviews, and ongoing application support. Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (Master's preferred), 5+ years of software development experience, and at least 2 years of leadership or people management experience. Strong experience with Node.js, JavaScript, Vue.js or React.js, GraphQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, REST APIs, and full-stack web application development is required.
Candidates should also have experience translating business requirements into technical solutions, mentoring developers, and supporting enterprise applications. The role will support the organization's primary Animal Resource Management System (ARMS), a custom-built platform that manages veterinary, research, and operational data, as well as additional business applications focused on workflow automation, reporting, and process improvement. The selected candidate will also help drive modernization efforts involving the migration of legacy .NET
applications into a modern Node.js-based architecture. Preferred experience includes AWS, Nuxt.js, MySQL/MariaDB, Oracle Analytics Server (OAS), CI/CD practices, process automation initiatives, and supporting applications within healthcare, research, higher education, or nonprofit environments. Candidates should possess excellent communication, problem-solving, organizational, and stakeholder management skills and be comfortable working in a collaborative environment where flexibility and adaptability are essential. This is a direct-hire opportunity based in Atlanta, GA.
While the position offers a hybrid work arrangement, candidates must be able to regularly attend meetings on-site and work closely with stakeholders. Permanent U.S. work authorization is required, as visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Experience leading small software development teams and mentoring engineers in a collaborative environment. Strong requirements gathering and stakeholder management experience, with the ability to translate ambiguous business needs into technical solutions. Ability to review unfamiliar codebases, understand existing architectures, and make informed enhancement recommendations. Demonstrated experience managing multiple priorities, projects, and stakeholders simultaneously. Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills. Experience conducting code reviews and establishing software development standards and best practices.
Understanding of application modernization initiatives, including migration of legacy systems to modern technology stacks. Knowledge of cloud-based application environments and modern software architecture principles. Ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Experience with in research, healthcare, higher education, nonprofit, or other mission-driven organizations is preferred. Comfortable working in a small team environment where flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to wear multiple hats are essential. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to work in a hybrid environment and regularly collaborate with stakeholders on-site in Atlanta. Permanent U.S. work authorization required;

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $125000.00 - $130000.00/yr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
