Senior Software Engineer

Shape the technical direction of the Business Line of Credit (BLOC) platform within Global Commercial Services
Design, build, and modernize critical BLOC software, contributing directly to architecture, design, code, and implementation
Provide technical leadership across engineering teams and establish modern, reusable engineering patterns
Modernize legacy applications and architectures using cloud-native technologies, distributed systems, APIs, automation, and modern software development practices
Help teams adopt American Express technology platforms and enterprise capabilities while simplifying unnecessary complexity
Improve reliability, availability, performance, and observability through automation and resilient design
Champion AI-enabled software development practices to improve productivity, quality, testing, and delivery velocity
Lead technical experiments and proofs of concept using emerging technologies
Partner with Engineering, Architecture, Product, and enterprise technology teams to influence technical direction and translate business needs into software solutions
Mentor engineers, share technical expertise, and raise engineering standards

• Significant hands-on software engineering experience building and operating large-scale, business-critical applications
• Strong programming and software design skills with the ability and desire to contribute directly to production software
• Deep knowledge of modern software engineering practices, distributed systems, APIs, microservices, and highly available architectures
• Strong public cloud fundamentals and experience designing, building, and operating cloud-native applications
• Experience modernizing legacy applications, architectures, and engineering patterns while managing complexity and technical risk
• Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, observability, infrastructure automation, and production operations
• Experience applying AI-enabled tools and capabilities across the software development lifecycle
• Ability to diagnose and solve complex technical and production problems across application and platform layers
• Ability to quickly learn new technologies, platforms, and enterprise tooling
• Ability to influence technical decisions, mentor engineers, and work effectively across engineering teams
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience
• Employment eligibility to work with American Express in the U.S.; visa sponsorship will not be pursued

Demonstrates expertise in building and modernizing large-scale, cloud-native applications while applying modern software engineering practices. Capable of providing technical leadership, mentoring engineers, and influencing technical direction across teams.
