Position: Laborer I

Job Opportunities

The Laborer I is the entry‑level job that performs semi‑skilled, manual work which is performed alone or as part of a crew, involving construction, repair and maintenance of buildings, parks and other public facilities and streets, storm drain maintenance, grounds maintenance, and custodial work.

Essential Job Functions
  • Performs various duties in landscaping including blowing, pruning, planting, fertilizing, cutting, trimming, and pulling weeds, raking, digging, edging, and weed eating.
  • Performs work in constructing, painting, repairing, or other duties associated with building maintenance.
  • Operates motorized equipment including mowers, tractors, edgers, trimmers, blowers, and other associated equipment.
  • Operates specialized equipment such as dump truck, sweeper, backhoe, and front‑end loader as needed.
  • Checks vehicles and equipment to ensure proper and safe operations, performs routine maintenance such as washing and cleaning, checking fluid levels, and lubricating, and reports mechanical problems to supervisor.
  • Cleans and maintains the grounds of City‑operated parks and beaches.
  • Cleans restrooms and ensures restrooms are adequately supplied with toilet paper and towels.
  • Assists other service and maintenance crews with manual labor tasks as assigned.
  • Assists with repairing storm sewers, streets, sidewalks, and crossovers as assigned.
  • Replaces street signs and may paint lines on City streets.
  • Cleans ditches and drainage systems.
  • Maintains a safe work area.
  • Follows chain of command.
  • Acts as a member of the critical workforce for inclement weather.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned such as erecting, maintaining, and taking down holiday decorations, assisting other departments as requested or required particularly in emergency situations, setting up for special events, moving heavy boxes or equipment, etc.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience: Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses or

Certifications:

Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated within 90-day probationary period. A CDL is preferred. Possession of or the ability to obtain a Georgia DOT Flagger certification or Heavy Equipment operator certification is encouraged.

Special Requirements: This position may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends to respond to the summer season (May – September) and to emergency issues.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of practices, procedures, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, storm drains, and related facilities, the maintenance of grounds and building facilities, and custodial duties.
  • Knowledge of safe work methods, safety precautions, and safety regulations related to street, sidewalk, storm drain, and related facilities construction and maintenance work, the maintenance of grounds and building facilities, and custodial work, particularly in the use of cleaning products and universal precautions to blood borne pathogens.
  • Knowledge of proper sanitary and safety precautions when handling trash, garbage, and other potential hazard.
  • Knowledge of department and City policies, procedures, directives, rules, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of geography, road network, traffic patterns public facilities, and emergency facilities of the City.
  • Knowledge of the principles of first aid and CPR.
  • Knowledge of the proper use of insecticides and herbicides.
  • Knowledge of construction trades, including electrical, carpentry, welding, masonry and concrete, plumbing, landscaping, and drainage.
  • Skill in operation of listed tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Skill in properly placing cones, barricades, warning devices, and directing traffic flow at job sites.
  • Skill in operating a motor vehicle in a safe manner and in using safe driving principles and practices.
