Crew Supervisor Grade 15 Salary: $44,179.20 ($21.24 hr) - $47,860.80 ($23.01 hr)

Purpose of Classification

The purpose of this classification is to perform supervisor/manual work functions associated with construction, maintenance and repair of county landfills, roads, bridges, and drainage systems.

Essential Functions
  • Supervises and evaluates assigned staff, directs work, processes employee concerns and problems, counsels, and disciplines, and completes employee performance appraisals; provides training and education.
  • Supervises the work of semi-skilled and/or skilled workers, inmates, and equipment operators engaged in the repair, maintenance or construction of roads/bridges, utility lines/facilities, landfill facilities, parks, grounds, or other county facilities.
  • Inspects facilities to identify necessary work; organizes/prioritizes departmental workload; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed projects.
  • Coordinates availability of equipment/materials needed for projects.
  • Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in construction, maintenance and repair of county landfills, roads, bridges, and drainage systems (which may include a dump truck, compactor, front-end loading truck, roll‑off truck, flatbed truck, roller, motor grader, backhoe, bulldozer, soil pan, scraper, asphalt spreader, water truck, tractor, cement mixer, air compressor, power generator, jackhammer, skilling saw, wood grinder, bush hog, mower, chain saw, shovel, and mechanic tools).
  • Supervises and/or performs manual work functions associated with construction, maintenance and repair of county landfills, roads bridges, and drainage systems (which may include constructing/repairing bridges; building/repairing roads; patching holes; rolling/packing asphalt; moving soil/earth; grading roads, shoulders, or other areas; digging holes or trenches; installing pipe; shoveling asphalt, road mix rock, dirt, etc., pouring/finishing concrete; laying brick and block; trimming and clearing shrubbery;

    removing trees and tree limbs; removing debris from ditches and right-of-ways; hauling materials; or loading and unloading trucks).
  • Inspects departmental machinery and equipment for proper working condition and maintenance; supervises and/or performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment/machinery in good working condition (e.g., checking conditions of tires, checking/replacing fluid levels, greasing equipment, and washing/cleaning equipment); reports faulty equipment for repair.
  • Cleans/maintains grounds and buildings of county facilities as needed; cleans/maintains areas around compactors and trash receptacles.
  • Processes a variety of documentation associated with departmental operations, per established procedures and within designated time frames; distributes documentation or maintains records as appropriate.
  • Prepares and/or receives various forms, logs, reports or other documents; processes and forwards as appropriate.
  • Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service.
  • Responds to routine requests for information from employees, officials, the public or other individuals.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the trade(s) required in the construction, maintenance and repair of the assigned area; knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to construction, maintenance and repair of facilities within the assigned area; knowledge of departmental functions, organizations, and policies; knowledge of the principles of supervision; knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of operating and servicing trucks and heavy construction equipment;

knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; knowledge of basic equipment and vehicle maintenance practices and procedures; and knowledge of the security procedures associated with supervising inmate work details.

Skill in performing the functions of the trade(s) pertaining to assigned area, skill in operating the various specialized equipment and tools related to the assigned area; and skill in performing basic equipment and vehicle maintenance tasks.
