Job Summary

The Custodian III performs highly complex custodial work in a residential setting, maintaining cleanliness and safety of state supported living center buildings and resident homes. The role requires independent judgment, coordination of supplies, inspection of facilities, and assistance with training and safety programs.

Responsibilities
  • Perform cleaning, dusting, and disinfecting of restrooms, office surfaces, programming areas, residents’ homes, bedrooms, and other SSLC areas.
  • Maintain cleaning supplies, chemicals, equipment, and records; restock supplies as needed.
  • Inspect buildings and equipment; conduct maintenance or minor repairs (e.g., buffers, waxing machines, vacuums).
  • Ensure resident homes/units meet or exceed minimum standards for cleanliness, health and safety, and infection control.
  • Monitor and document supply usage and equipment conditions.
  • Assist the Custodian Manager in implementing safety and infection control programs.
  • Provide training and coaching to Custodians I and II staff as directed.
  • Participate in disaster response or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activities as required.
  • Serve on‑call and on rotating schedule when operational needs arise.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of cleaning techniques and procedures (dusting, sweeping, mopping, stripping and waxing floors, cleaning and disinfecting restrooms/shower stalls).
  • Knowledge of inventory control principles.
  • Skills in using custodial materials, chemicals, and equipment.
  • Skills in using and maintaining building maintenance tools.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and stay on task.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, stand and walk on hard floors for extended periods.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with co‑workers and patients; work irregular hours.
Licensure, Registrations, and Certifications
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it within 90 days of hire.
  • Applicants with an out‑of‑state driver license must submit an original certified driving record.
Initial Screening Criteria
  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent (preferred).
  • At least six (6) months paid experience in custodial/housekeeping work (required); one (1) year of experience (preferred).
  • Preferred:
    One (1) year experience in an environment with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities or mental health disorders.

  • Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities.
  • Males between ages 18–25 must register with the Selective Service.
  • All State Supported Living Center employees are subject to random drug testing.
  • Flexibility in work hours may be required; overtime and extended hours possible.
  • Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
  • Minimum age for consideration: 18 years.
