Job Overview
General Maintenance Worker - Intermittent at Riverland Community College (Albert Lea Campus, Owatonna Campus), part-time. Multiple openings are available for this position. The position, under general supervision, performs a variety of indoor and outdoor cleaning and maintenance activities in order to provide a safe, clean environment for faculty, staff and students.
Responsibilities- Maintain and repair the college's building and grounds to provide a clean, comfortable, healthy and safe environment.
Ensure floors and carpets are cleaned by machine and/or manual processes of sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, waxing, and stripping wax, vacuuming, and dusting.
Clean and maintain windows, skylights, ceilings, and walls by determining appropriate cleaning agents, mixing chemicals, and applying them.
Clean and maintain rooms and furniture to provide usable office, classroom and meeting spaces by dusting, cleaning, moving furniture and equipment, removing trash, and making minor repairs.
Clean restrooms to provide a sanitary environment by scrubbing floors and sinks, emptying wastebaskets, and trash containers, and maintaining an adequate supply of soap and paper products.
Perform grounds work to enhance the appearance of landscape and to maintain the health of flowers, plants, lawns, and trees by planting, cutting, and mowing, raking, seeding, trimming, and watering.
Clean assigned sidewalks and parking lots so that a safe, orderly appearance and accessibility are ensured by removing snow, ice, debris, and rubbish.
- Assist with security and building checks to ensure the physical safety of the premises.
Secure work area by locking doors, checking emergency exits, setting alarms, and checking all lighting.
Identify safety hazards such as faulty electric cords, loose carpet, floor tiles; fix if possible or create a work order.
Encourage unauthorized persons to leave the building or contact the appropriate safety administrator for assistance.
Turn in lost articles found to the appropriate place and/or person.
- Assist with the set up and delivery of equipment and supplies for on-campus events.
Assemble classrooms and other areas for special classes, meetings, conferences, community events and commencements.
Assemble and/or relocate office furniture to new locations as required.
Assist with the receiving and delivery of equipment and supplies.
- Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department and maintain the reputation of the organization as a viable business partner.
- Knowledge of different types of flooring/floor covering sufficient to determine proper methods of maintenance and appropriate cleaning methods, materials, agents, and equipment.
- Knowledge of chemical cleaning agents such as ammonia, bleaches, scouring agents and soaps sufficient to appropriately select the agent(s), handle, apply, and dispose of safely.
- Knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in maintenance sufficient to use effectively, operate safely and to make minor repairs.
- Ability to maintain physical health and endurance sufficient to perform work functions.
- Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform assigned tasks with limited work direction.
- Ability to keep simple records.
- Physical requirements:
ability to perform a variety of physical tasks, lift and carry materials weighing 40-60 lbs. (and occasionally more with assistance), and work in inclement weather conditions when necessary.
- Current State of MN Boiler Operators License - Class A, B, C, or Special Engineer.
- Knowledge of general methods of the mechanical, masonry, welding, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and painting trades.
- Ability to perform semi-skilled work in a number of trade areas and to assist with more difficult work.
- Bilingual/multilingual fluent in Spanish, Karen, Karenni, Somali, Pohnpeian, French, Anuak, Nuer, or other languages that reflect our student body, workforce, and communities.
- Demonstrated experience working with multicultural and underserved populations.
