The University of Texas at Austin Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is committed to inspiring the conservation and cultivation of native plants through its garden, education, research and outreach programs. Founded by Lady Bird Johnson and Helen Hayes in 1982, the Wildflower Center is the state botanic garden of Texas, a treasured Austin gem, and a national leader in the field of native plant education, sustainable landscapes, land restoration and research.

It is home to the largest living collection of Texas native plants in the state, welcomes over 276,000 visitors annually, has over 17,000 members and reaches more than 2 million people per year through its website and plant database. The Center is focused on improving landscapes, promoting biodiversity, and connecting people with our environment.

Purpose

As a part of the Facilities Team, perform general and specialized custodial and repair work in and around the Wildflower Center's buildings, grounds, and other facilities. This full-time position will require a 5-day work week schedule:
Sunday-Thursday, 10am-6:30pm.

Responsibilities
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and remove trash throughout the facility, including cleanliness of areas outside buildings (picnic areas, patios, water stations, etc.). Keep closets organized, stocked, and clean. Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures. Report all unsafe activities to supervisors and Safety Committee.
  • Perform maintenance and repair work in the performance of a variety of tasks in one or more craft areas independently or with others. Task areas include HVAC maintenance (adjust thermostats, change filters, etc.), plumbing maintenance (repair clogged commodes, sinks, urinals, etc.), electrical maintenance (replace light bulbs/fixtures), painting and carpentry repairs.
  • Perform set-up and take-down of tables, chairs, and other equipment for the Wildflower Center or privately sponsored events held on-site. Support special events outside of normal working hours.
  • Secure buildings and rooms on schedule and/or after cleaning. Secure campus site and boundary fence gates. Follow correct unlocking, locking, and alarm procedures. Interact with visitors, volunteers, and staff in a professional, courteous manner. Drive golf cart to perform duties in remote locations of the property.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
  • At least one year of experience as a laborer
  • Prior experience cleaning and maintaining facilities
  • Valid Texas driver's license and a clean driving record
  • Dependable transportation to and from the Wildflower Center
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to use handheld power tools and cleaning equipment
  • Ability to withstand outdoor conditions

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • More than the required experience as a laborer
  • Two years of experience performing custodial and maintenance tasks in a garden, museum or event setting
  • Experience with HVAC, plumbing, electrical and carpentry repairs
  • First Aid, CPR, AED certification
Salary Range

$41,600

Working Conditions
  • Must be willing and able to work outside in all types of weather.
  • May be exposed to hazardous wildlife, horticultural chemicals, dust, fumes, smoke, and loud noises.
  • Physical stamina and ability to lift, push and pull fifty pounds is required.
  • Works independently and unsupervised on a regular basis.
Work Shift
  • Five day, 8-hour work days:
    Sunday through Thursday, 10:00am-6:30pm
  • Occasional evenings, weekends and holidays will be required for mission related events.
