Job Summary
Under close supervision, performs custodial and/or laundry duties, which include keeping County facilities clean and orderly. Cleans and maintains the appearance of offices, restrooms and floors. Performs washing, sorting, drying, processing and delivering laundry, towels and linens as required. Uses appropriate safety procedures and equipment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThis classification is within the Maintenance job family and may involve general levels of maintenance. Duties may vary by assignment and can be in a Custodial Unit or a Laundry Unit. The position may require a flexible and sometimes late-night schedule and may involve work in a secure facility.
Duties and Responsibilities- Performs general cleaning, sweeping, mopping, dusting, scrubbing, vacuuming, emptying waste baskets and recycling containers; cleans and disinfects restrooms; assembles, irons, folds laundry; maintains replacement clothing room.
- Operates buffer, stripper, waxer, vacuum, and carpet cleaning machines.
- Clears walls, windows, light fixtures, and air supply/return registers; disinfects restrooms.
- Uses laundry equipment, receives and sorts soiled laundry, towels, and linens; loads, unloads, and delivers processed laundry.
- Inspects clothing for cleanliness, mends torn items, monitors and maintains inventory of cleaning and laundry supplies; may handle contaminated articles and replace chemicals.
- Secures and locks building; turns out lights in completed areas; replaces light bulbs; moves office furniture and other items as needed.
- Assists groundskeeper with yard work.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
One (1) year of general housekeeping or laundry experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that shows the ability to perform the duties of this position.
PreferredOne year of floor and carpet care experience, including one year of groundskeeping experience.
Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, orSpecial Requirements
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of- Policies, practices, procedures, and methods of janitorial/custodian/laundry functions.
- Cleaning equipment, products, and garment and linen care techniques.
- Applicable safety practices and regulations.
- Operating cleaning equipment such as buffers, strippers, waxers, vacuums, carpet cleaning machines, and commercial washers and dryers.
- Cleaning windows, dusting furniture, and unclogging toilets.
- Verbal and written communication in English.
- Understand, read, and follow spoken or written instructions in English; communicate effectively.
- Work independently and efficiently.
- Manage timelines and meet deadlines.
- Sort laundry items by color or type.
- Build effective working relationships with County employees and officials; respond to supervisory directions professionally; occasionally communicate with the general public.
- Safely and correctly operate cleaning and laundering equipment.
Physical requirements include the ability to lift/carry up to 50 pounds, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination, and manual dexterity necessary to operate basic custodial and laundry equipment. Tasks involve frequent standing, walking, climbing stairs or ladders, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, pushing, pulling, reaching, twisting, balancing, repetitive motion, and squatting. Exposure to communicable diseases, radiation, hazardous waste, human fecal matter, and foul odors may occur.
Work may be in wet areas and involve handling wet clothing or equipment.
Work Hours:
3:00 pm – 11:30 pm. Works some nights, and some weekends.
