Overview
Custodian II position with the Health & Human Services Commission (HHSC) at Austin State Hospital. This is a day shift, full-time role in Building and Grounds Cleaning and Maintenance. Not eligible for telework. Salary range and employment details are provided in the posting materials.
Responsibilities- Perform custodial duties including sweeping, mopping, dusting, cleaning windows and light fixtures, and ensuring proper sanitization and disinfection according to training.
- Clean and maintain floors, restrooms, nurses’ station, and other areas following established procedures and safety measures.
- Maintain interior and exterior of assigned buildings, manage trash and debris, and replenish supplies as needed.
- Operate floor maintenance equipment (e.g., strippers, buffers, vacuums, extractors).
- Inspect buildings and equipment for cleanliness and needed repairs; assist in minor building and equipment repairs and installations.
- Maintain custodial equipment in good working order and manage inventory records.
- Support patients and staff by providing a safe environment; cooperate with hospital teams and participate in disaster response and/or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation as required (may require alternate shift patterns or locations).
- Coach other custodians as needed and perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
(KSAs)
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, standards, and sanitation regulations.
- Knowledge of infection control principles and methods.
- Knowledge of inventory control principles and methods.
- Skill in the use of custodial equipment, materials, and safe handling of chemicals.
- Skill in the use and maintenance of building maintenance tools and equipment.
- Ability to stay on task and complete work timely; follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods.
- Ability to work harmoniously with co-workers and patients and to work irregular hours.
- Initial Screening Criteria:
Six months of work experience required; experience in custodial or environmental services in healthcare or similar settings preferred (nursing homes, hospitals, residential facilities, hotels). - Registrations, Licensure or
Certifications:
None required.
- Applicants must pass a fingerprint background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE).
- Minimum age requirements:
All applicants must be at least 18 years old; some locations may require 21 years for certain programs. - Flexibility in work hours; overtime and extended hours may be required.
- Immunization policy compliance is required; vaccine-preventable diseases may require vaccination or masking as appropriate.
