Job Description Summary
The Director of Engineering & Security (DOE) is the onsite leader responsible for the building, equipment, grounds condition and security of the hotel. The DOE oversees maintenance and repairs, preventative maintenance for all areas, and ensures a clean, organized maintenance shop and secure inventory of tools, supplies, furniture, fixtures, and equipment. This role reports to the Executive Leadership Team and contributes to guest and associate satisfaction, expense control, and product quality while driving toward overall hotel goals.
Key Responsibilities- Manage day-to-day operations of the engineering & security areas, ensuring quality and standards meet customer and employee expectations.
- Implement and supervise preventative maintenance of mechanical/electrical systems, public areas, and guest rooms according to standards and schedules.
- Coordinate with vendors for product and service information, pricing, availability, and delivery schedules.
- Process purchase requests and manage contract procurement, ensuring work is properly performed.
- Inspect facilities, recommend service improvements, and maintain building exterior, parking garage, and storage areas.
- Communicate maintenance needs to department leaders, monitor work orders, and ensure timely completion.
- Maintain and service the pool, controlling chemical levels and filter cleanliness.
- Perform repairs on malfunctioning systems and equipment, coordinating preventive work.
- Order, receive, and inventory supplies and operating equipment.
- Review guest satisfaction survey results with employees and ensure adherence to safety and sanitation standards.
- Respond promptly to guest complaints and follow up as required.
- Maintain professional appearance and grooming.
- Carry out any additional duties assigned by the hotel leadership.
- Lead staffing processes: interview, hire, train, promote, provide feedback, and conduct performance evaluations.
- Support team development through training, recognition, and fair treatment.
- Collaborate with other departments and corporate office to achieve hotel objectives.
- Motivate employees, foster a trusting environment, and exemplify integrity and respect.
- Promote Sonesta’s core values and guest service standards among the team.
- Ensure compliance with service contracts, statutory regulations, and safety standards.
- Prepare weekly work schedules aligned with staffing guidelines and adjust as needed.
- Analyze guest satisfaction data and develop improvement plans aligned with score goals.
- Assist in capital budgeting and participate in the annual departmental budget, controlling labor costs and operating expenses.
- Offer financial oversight to meet revenue, budget, and staffing objectives.
Frequent lifting of up to 50 lbs. and movement of objects up to 100 lbs. Occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force, with frequent or constant exertion of up to 20 pounds. Tasks include standing, bending, climbing, kneeling, and moving throughout the hotel in all weather conditions. Use of tools, exposure to high voltage equipment, and adherence to OSHA and electrical code safety are required.
ExpectedHours of Work
Workweek is variable and may include weekends and holidays. Shifts can be day, night, or overnight, with occasional ten- to twelve-hour shifts.
Education and ExperienceHigh school diploma or equivalent required. Two‑year degree in Building & Construction, Engineering, Mechanics, or a related field is preferred. Minimum of 5 years in engineering/maintenance or related professional area, with technical training in HVAC‑R, electrical, plumbing, and supervisory experience. Prior hotel or service industry experience is an asset. General trade knowledge (HVAC, painting, electrical, plumbing, carpentry) and certification in at least one qualified trade are required.
