Lead Custodian I
Directs and coordinates a variety of cleaning tasks related to the upkeep and maintenance of a sanitary environment for the college facilities.
Minimum Requirements- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years minimum of institutional or commercial custodian experience.
- Previous supervisory experience.
- Flexibility and ability to change shift when requested.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record of less than five (5) points.
- Ability to participate in blood borne pathogens training within six (6) months of employment.
- Hepatitis B vaccination or a signed waiver.
- May be required to pass a background investigation (driving, fingerprint and criminal history).
- May be required to complete a pre‑hire, post‑offer physical examination and drug screening.
- Demonstrated knowledge of cleaning practices, cleaning terms, and chemical usage and safety procedures related to hazardous substances.
- Knowledge of planning, organizing and coordinating all aspects of custodial functions.
- Experience directing the work of others.
- Ability to detect or assess situations and take appropriate action in case of an emergency.
- Ability to orally communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
- Ability to listen and comprehend verbal communication.
- Ability to follow written and oral directions.
- Ability to read and understand labels and instructions, particularly on cleaning chemicals.
- Ability to use mechanically powered cleaning equipment safely and efficiently.
- Ability to perform physical job duties such as handling trash/recycling containers, unloading supplies and moving heavy equipment and furniture.
- Must be able to work independently, without close supervision.
- Computer knowledge and experience.
- Command of the English language due to frequent contact.
- Oversee work performance of assigned custodians to ensure cleaning services meet department standards.
- Maintain quality standards during non‑routine cleaning and emergencies.
- Assign personnel to established work areas and projects.
- Adjust employee work schedules to cover absences or vacancies, ensuring daily work requirements are met.
- Respond to stakeholder concerns/requests and take necessary action, including timely follow‑up.
- Instruct and assist staff in cleaning procedures, techniques, and use of new methods and products.
- Give corrective instruction or re‑training in proper cleaning methods, equipment, and safety; conduct on‑the‑job training when appropriate.
- Ensure supply guidelines are followed and staff is trained in chemical usage; monitor workplace safety and ensure proper PPE.
- Conduct project work as directed by supervisor, either individually or as part of a team, completed in a timely manner.
- Report supply and maintenance needs; obtain and distribute supplies.
- Perform custodian duties as needed or directed.
- Participate in snow removal or other duties assigned during college emergencies.
- Follow all county, state, college, and departmental policies, procedures, and practices in a service environment.
