The Community Aide supports the Department of General Services by assisting with facilities maintenance operations and/or fleet service coordination. This role provides hands‑on support to skilled trades staff, performs general maintenance and custodial duties, and assists with administrative, customer service, and compliance‑related functions to ensure City facilities and fleet operations run efficiently and safely.
Essential Functions- Assist Building Repairers or Fleet staff with repair, maintenance, and operational support tasks, including priming and painting walls; installing, repairing, or replacing doors, ceilings, floorboards, windows, or supporting fleet equipment and vehicle operations.
- Perform minor painting, carpentry, custodial, or general maintenance duties as assigned in facilities or fleet environments.
- Conduct visual inspections of City‑owned facilities, fixtures, equipment, or fleet assets and report maintenance, safety, or operational issues to supervisors.
- Lead or assist with cleanup and organization following repairs, maintenance work, emergencies, or weather‑related events.
- Respond to City emergencies or inclement weather events in support of facilities or fleet operations, as required.
- Maintain an orderly storeroom, rotate stock, track supplies, and enter inventory or materials data into computerized systems.
- Perform general housekeeping and cleanliness duties to ensure safe, organized, and functional work spaces.
- Follow established safety procedures, departmental policies, and supervisor instructions while supporting daily operations.
- One (1) year of experience in cleaning or custodial work.
- Preferred: experience in facilities support and maintenance, customer service, or administrative support; skilled trades assistance; or fleet operations.
- Knowledge of the tools, materials, techniques and equipment of four of the five following areas: painting, carpentry, masonry, plumbing or electrical trades.
- Knowledge of cleaning materials and methods.
- Ability to perform minor painting and carpentry duties.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to multitask and work effectively in a fast‑paced, team‑oriented environment.
- Ability to follow instructions.
- Ability to read gauges and monitor furnaces.
Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointments to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint. All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six‑month probation period.
