Supervises: Student Participants in Prevention Advocacy Club.

Function / Position Summary

Prevention Advocacy Club Advisors are responsible for overseeing and organizing club meetings and events in the interest of drug prevention and education. This position requires a commitment to developing plans for club meetings that provide students with opportunities to develop leadership skills and advocate to their peers. The advisor will utilize tools provided by the prevention education specialist to drive student feedback and action opportunities.

The advisor will establish a team culture and high expectations for collaboration among all club participants with effective implementation of strategies, structure, and opportunities to achieve success.

Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • Facilitate and supervise the operation of the advocacy club, including club meetings and activities outside of regular school hours.
  • Implement educational content, programs, and activities provided by the club organizer, focusing on the harms of substance abuse.
  • Encourage and support student involvement and leadership within the club, empowering students to develop their own peer education projects.
  • Provide a safe and inclusive environment for all club members to discuss and learn about substance abuse prevention.
  • Collaborate with school administration, staff, and community resources to ensure the success of the club’s initiatives.
  • Accept and implement ideas from students, staff, and the club organizer, adapting programs and activities to fit the specific needs of the school community.
  • Maintain regular communication with building admin and prevention education specialist and provide feedback on the club’s progress and effectiveness.
  • Serve as a mentor to students, offering guidance on how to effectively educate their peers.
  • Ensure compliance with all school policies and guidelines related to student clubs.
  • Maintain meeting agenda, notes, and attendance for club activities.
Education
  • Teacher, Social Worker, Counselor, Psychologist licensure preferred
  • Knowledge or experience in substance abuse prevention or student wellness initiatives is beneficial but not required
  • Demonstrated ability to manage student groups and facilitate discussions on sensitive topics.
  • Commitment to fostering student leadership and peer education in a school environment.
Experience / Knowledge
  • Understanding of substance abuse prevention, particularly among adolescents.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to coordinate and manage meetings and activities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, school staff, and external partners.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to mentor and guide students, fostering a supportive environment.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to adapt activities and address student concerns effectively.
  • Understanding of school policies and procedures, with the ability to navigate and adhere to them.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods during meetings or activities.
  • Occasional lifting of educational materials, supplies, or equipment (up to 20 lbs).
  • Ability to actively participate in club activities, which may include light physical movement.
  • Visual and auditory ability to monitor student behavior and participation effectively.
Terms of Employment
  • Must conduct a minimum of 20 club/activity student meeting hours per year (10 per semester).
  • Will be paid a total of $29.50 per hour in two $295.00 installments at the end of each semester.
