Building Maintenance Worker

Working under the direction of the Fleet & Facilities Director, the Building Maintenance Worker responds to maintenance requests, performs routine inspections and repairs, coordinates with contractors when needed, and utilizes computerized work order systems to efficiently manage assigned tasks. This position requires a strong work ethic, attention to detail, excellent customer service, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
SALARY RANGE: $23.28 - $25.70 DOQ
Essential Job FunctionsEssential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Building Maintenance:
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance on City buildings and facilities.
- Troubleshoot and repair plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, drywall, painting, and general building maintenance issues.
- Replace light fixtures, bulbs, door hardware, ceiling tiles, and other building components.
- Perform power washing, furniture assembly, office relocations, and facility setup.
- Conduct routine facility inspections and identify maintenance needs.
- Coordinate with contractors for specialized repairs and maintenance projects.
- Respond promptly to maintenance work orders using computerized maintenance management software (CMMS).
- Maintain accurate records of completed work and communicate project status through email and other electronic systems.
- Safely operate tools, equipment, and service vehicles.
- Performs other related work as directed.
Custodial Duties (performed on an as needed basis):
- Clean and sanitize offices, restrooms, kitchens, meeting rooms, and common areas.
- Operate custodial equipment including vacuums, floor buffers, and other cleaning equipment.
- Properly use, handle, and store cleaning chemicals in accordance with safety standards.
- Clean and maintain tools, equipment, storage areas, and assigned service vehicle.
- Report facility deficiencies and repair needs to the supervisor.
- Performs other related work as directed.
Marginal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate initiative, dependability, and professionalism in completing assignments.
- Safeguard City property, equipment, and facilities.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding City operations
- Assist with special events, emergency response, and other duties as assigned.
Special Requirements:
- Regular attendance is an essential function of this position. Scheduled leave should be managed to not interfere with the ability to accomplish tasks, including special projects and assignments with deadlines.
- Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and after-hours callouts as needed.
- Must be available to respond to emergencies and assist with special projects and City events.
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Six (6) months to one (1) year of experience in building maintenance, facility maintenance, construction, custodial services, or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
Licenses: Valid Texas Driver's License with an acceptable driving record to be maintained throughout employment.
Additional Qualifications:
- Successfully pass pre-employment background check, physical exam, and drug screening.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of building maintenance systems and custodial practices.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, drywall, painting, and preventative maintenance.
- Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, chemicals, and safety procedures.
- Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and work instructions.
- Proficiency in using tablets, computers, email, and computerized maintenance management software.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently while also contributing as a member of a team.
- Ability to obtain contractor quotes and coordinate maintenance activities as assigned.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and departmental needs.
