Mechanical Inspector

The City of Battle Creek is looking for a Mechanical Inspector to perform difficult technical work conducting building and property maintenance inspections for compliance with building codes and ordinances, reviewing permits, plans, and building specifications, responding to inquiries, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work performed under the limited supervision of the Chief Building Official.

Essential Functions:

  • Serves as Mechanical Inspector in accordance with Michigan's adopted Mechanical Codes and City Ordinances.
  • Inspects mechanical devices and all related installations in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings/facilities for conformance to safety laws, regulations, approved plans, and specifications.
  • Makes written and oral investigations, reports and recommendations relative to mechanical matters in addition to issuing notification to property owners when code violations are determined.
  • Confers with property owners or agents to approve mechanical installation plans to determine compliance with code requirements.
  • Operates test equipment used in the inspection of mechanical systems.
  • Keeps records and prepares reports of inspections and investigations for use by administrative or judicial authorities.
  • Reviews permit applications, blueprints, plans and specifications to ensure that all mechanical code and ordinance requirements are complied with.
  • Educates Mechanical Contractors and the public in code compliance requirements.
  • Investigates complaints regarding installation of Mechanical systems done by unlicensed contractors and work completed without a permit.
  • Provides a high level of customer service handling inquiries from citizens, contractors, architects, etc., regarding code and ordinance interpretations, clarification of office policies and general questions.
  • Conducts inspections at the request of Police and Fire staff at incident scenes (may require periodic after-hours callout).
  • Ability to prepare and objectively analyze comprehensive reports; ability to carry out assigned projects to completion; ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City Commission, City employees, and the public to include both residents and trade professionals.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • Licensed and certified as one or more of the following:
  • Mechanical Inspector
  • Mechanical Contractor
  • Journeyman (Minimum 8,000 hrs of experience over 4 years)
  • Military Honorably Discharged (within 1 year of being discharged, with experience as an interior electrician or equivalent job classification signed affidavit by superior)
  • Experience in each of the work classifications defined in PA 407 of 2016 as amended.
  • Valid registration as an Mechanical Inspector in the State of Michigan (may substitute ability to be provisionally registered within thirty {30} days of employment, but must obtain registration at the first available date set by the State of Michigan).

Special Requirements:

  • Obtain State of Michigan Building Inspector Registration within 3 months of hire.
  • Valid driver's license in the State of Michigan.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical.

Working Conditions:

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, bending, reaching, hand dexterity (grasping, holding, keyboarding, repetitive movements), reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, seeing (near and/or far, color, depth, field of vision), hearing, using the telephone, contact with government officials and the general public, working overtime, and working inside and alone.

Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
