Shift Supervisor

This position is a working supervisor in charge of the operation and minor maintenance of a large capacity wastewater treatment plant and five combined sewer retention basins. This position oversees, participates, and gives direction in the proper procedures and methods to a small crew of wastewater treatment plant operators engaged in all phases of plant and retention basin operations. This position requires working rotating shifts covering weekends, evenings, and holidays.

This position also requires working a relief shift.

Key duties and responsibilities include preparing reports as requested by Operation Manager and Superintendent, maintaining operational databases, preparing work requests for equipment in need of repair, operating wastewater processes in an efficient manner, monitoring and regulating the flow of the combined sewer system, ensuring compliance of facilities with all NPDES permit limitations, overseeing minor equipment repairs, diagnosing and repairing minor electrical problems, observing and recording readings from equipment for efficient operation, collecting samples for laboratory analysis, maintaining building and grounds, maintaining employee work schedules, monitoring process chemicals, and performing other related work as required.

Abilities required include wearing respirators and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, performing routine wastewater laboratory analysis, overseeing the work of others, acting quickly and competently in making necessary wastewater operation adjustments, understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions, establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships, and working effectively under stress and changes in work priorities.

Minimum job requirements include a high school diploma or GED equivalent, two years' experience in wastewater treatment plant operations, a valid Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Level "D" certification, the ability to obtain a Level "C" certification within three years of job award, previous supervisory experience, knowledge of operational maintenance requirements, knowledge of principles, practices, and methods used in wastewater treatment operations, knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety precautions, experience in using computer programs including Microsoft applications, and a valid State of Michigan driver's license.
