Bellevue Utilities is seeking a Skilled Worker to join our Storm and Surface Water team. The Storm and Surface Water team is tasked with inspection, operation and maintenance of the City’s Storm and Surface Water System that:

  • Provides flood control;
    Protects water quality;
  • Provides the safe conveyance of stormwater to streams, lakes and wetlands;
  • Protects natural habitat; and Provides education to protect the environment.

As a Skilled Worker with the Storm and Surface Water team, we are looking for individuals that are focused on being part of a team, have a passion for improving water quality and protection of our streams and lakes within Bellevue. Individuals assigned to this job classification perform a wide variety of maintenance-related tasks. Under direct supervision, employees will inspect, repair, construct, and clean the public drainage system;

be involved in vegetation removal and brushing; reconstruct stream corridors; dig around utility sites, drive light duty vehicles and keep them clean; as well as flag and direct traffic. This job classification typically inspects and maintains a variety of tools and safety equipment used in their job. The work is often strenuous and repetitive.

  • Perform routine inspection, repair, construction, and drainage maintenance. Perform basic masonry and pavement and utility repair.
  • Use backhoes, dump trucks, truck and trailer combinations, forklifts, etc. Clean catch basins and pipelines.
  • Clear brush and weeds in detention ponds. Remove debris from streams.
  • Perform inspections of the storm drainage system.
  • Assist in storm events and pollution event response emergencies.
  • Basic mechanic skills/knowledge.
  • Six months work knowledge/experience in construction. Customer service experience with the general public.
  • Basic computer and keyboard skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in teams.
  • General knowledge and ability to interpret maps, drawings, and records.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to safety procedures, work rules, and guidelines. Possess excellent verbal, listening, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be able and willing to work overtime (including nights and weekends). Required to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver’s license by date of hire. Must have and maintain a good driving record by City standards.
  • Must be able to obtain a Washington State Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a tanker endorsement within one year of employment. The City offers paid training to obtain a Class A CDL.
  • Selected candidate must pass a pre-employment flexibility test and physical capacity test.
  • Selected candidates who possess a current CDL must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test (consistent with Federal Laws requiring drug and alcohol testing for all job classifications requiring a CDL).
  • Selected candidates who do not currently possess a CDL will be subject to a drug and alcohol test upon obtaining CDL in accordance with DOT rules and regulations.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands
  • Must be able to lift up to 90 lbs. and engage in considerable bending at the waist, pulling, pushing, and climbing.
