The Maintenance Assistant is responsible for assisting the Maintenance Director in maintaining the community in good repair at all times, including interior and exterior surfaces, fixtures, equipment, and mechanical systems. This includes performing routine maintenance and repairs, responding to emergency repair requests, completing preventive maintenance tasks, and helping ensure the facility remains safe, clean, and functional.
Reporting:
This position reports directly to the Maintenance Director.
- Maintain all interior fixtures in good repair, including walls, woodwork, handrails, nurse call systems, light fixtures, furniture, and related equipment
- Maintain plumbing, electrical, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems according to established procedures, manufacturer instructions, and applicable laws and regulations
- Troubleshoot failures in plumbing, electrical, heating, air conditioning, or ventilation systems and obtain appropriate licensed service providers under the direction of the Maintenance Director
- Review the Maintenance Log and promptly complete and document required repairs
- Respond promptly to emergency repair requests
- Assist with routine maintenance checks, including emergency generator testing, fire alarms, fire extinguishers, smoke and heat detectors, sprinkler systems, water temperatures, oxygen systems, call lights, fans, and ventilation filters
- Maintain the exterior of the building, including painting, pipe and duct cleaning, grounds, and general upkeep
- Maintain the workshop and mechanical room in a neat, clean, and hazard-free condition
- Ensure paints and other flammable materials are properly stored
- Clean garbage cans and refuse areas
- Perform general repairs, including broken windows and screens, loose handrails or grab bars, loose furniture legs, door knobs, and door fixtures
- Repair and maintain wheelchairs
- Periodically inspect, clean, and repair roofs and gutters as necessary
- Assist with the preventive maintenance schedule for mechanical patient lifts, kitchen grease traps, washers and dryers, refrigerators and freezers, dishwashers, ice machines, shower chairs, hair dryers, shower hoses, suction machines, generators, call systems, heating and cooling systems, community vehicles, and other equipment
- Assist the Maintenance Director in maintaining required Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
- Practice infection control policies and procedures of the department and community
- Practice safety procedures of the department and community
- React appropriately to emergencies and disaster situations
- Assist the Maintenance Director with Quality Assurance Program initiatives
- Be courteous, considerate, and cooperative when communicating with community personnel, residents, families, and the public
- Attend required in-service training and staff meetings
- Attend and participate in community committee meetings as required
- Assist with monthly fire drills, internal disaster drills, and required external and mass casualty drills
- Perform other duties as assigned
- High School graduate or equivalent preferred
- No professional license required
At least 1 year of experience in one or more of the following fields preferred
- General maintenance in an institution or building
- Carpentry or community construction
- Plumbing and/or electrical
- Appliance maintenance
