General Description of Work

Whatcom Community College invites applications for a Custodian 2 (Class Code 678J) position in the College’s Facilities and Operations Department. Under general supervision of the Custodial Supervisor, this position performs various custodial and maintenance related tasks to ensure and maintain proper cleanliness of facilities. The position will make rounds, lock doors, close windows and turn off lights. It interacts with the supervisor and co‑workers as well as members of the campus community to accomplish work.

Designated work areas are assigned by the supervisor; additional work assignments are made to address special needs or fill gaps when other employees are absent. Work areas rotate on a regular schedule.

Responsibilities
  • Flexibility to adjust shift with advanced notice to meet the needs of the institution.
  • Perform custodial duties including general and deep cleaning of classrooms, restrooms, floors, student housing units and residential common areas, offices, and other common areas using hand tools, custodial equipment, and cleaning chemicals.
  • Unlock and lock doors, turn off lights, and secure campus buildings and rooms.
  • Stock and inventory supplies, which may require operating campus vehicles.
  • Identify, report, and take corrective action to resolve maintenance problems.
  • Improve work methods, knowledge of equipment, supplies, and safety through participation in training sessions with supervisors.
  • Move furniture and equipment, arrange tables and chairs for special events.
  • Clean interior and exterior windows, using a tucker pole, scrubbers, squeegees, and other window cleaning equipment.
  • Empty garbage, recycling, and compost, supporting campus sustainability efforts.
  • Complete minor repairs to custodial equipment, changing bags, bulbs, belts, and more.
  • Follow recommended safety procedures and attend safety training.
  • Require punctual and regular attendance.
  • Actively contribute to a work and learning environment that treats everyone with respect and dignity, engaging diverse perspectives to enhance the College’s mission, vision, and promise.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid Washington driver’s license and insurability.
  • Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the custodial position, including lifting up to 50 pounds and standing, walking, stooping for the majority of the shift and climbing ladders.
  • Six months to one year of experience in custodial or cleaning work.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a community college or higher education work environment.
  • Experience in multi‑housing, dormitory, or hotel hospitality/room service.
  • Develops innovative ideas that provide solutions to workplace challenges and brings ideas to the supervisor.
  • Earns the trust, respect, and confidence of coworkers and the public through consistent honesty, forthrightness, and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Actively contributes to a work environment that embraces diversity, using diverse perspectives to enhance organizational goals and treating everyone with respect and dignity.
