Qualifications
  • Master's Degree.
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License.
  • Minimum of 5 years teaching experience.
  • Endorsement as Reading Specialist.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad constituency, including parents.
  • Deep knowledge of reading, writing, and literacy development.
  • Outstanding presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Interpersonal skills (communication, problem solving, conflict management, collaboration) to share research-based instructional approaches with teachers and administrators, and provide advice, mentoring, and coaching.
  • Strong organizational skills.
Description

The Reading Coach will support all staff in implementing the site reading plan and program. The Coach will work directly with teachers in a school, providing classroom-based demonstrations, collaborative and one-on-one support, and facilitating teacher inquiry and related professional development. The Coach will focus on enhancing teachers’ ability to provide instruction that builds students’ sense of engagement in the ownership of learning.

The Coach will also work with administrators and teachers to collect and analyze data, interpret it, and use it to guide instructional decisions.

Job Summary
  • Guide teachers to collect and analyze data and develop action plans in response to determined student needs.
  • Provide individualized classroom-based support to implement comprehensive program, including modeling of best teaching practices.
  • Work with principals within the grantee site to create a school-wide focus on goals for reading achievement.
  • Oversee the school’s assessment procedure, training, data collection and collaborate with the principal to complete reports due.
  • Participate fully in professional development opportunities, research, and reading.
  • Job Responsibilities
    • Lead building efforts to increase literacy achievement for all student populations and facilitate the transition to and the implementation of the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
    • Assist teachers with implementation of Common Core State Standards via the district framework of Reader’s/Writer’s Workshop and Word Work.
    • Assist teachers with continued implementation of the district’s Literacy Plan.
    • Demonstrate exemplary literacy instruction for all teachers through researched-based practices: observation, coaching, model lessons, collaborative lesson planning, and small/large group professional development.
    • Plan and conduct Literacy team meetings through the PLC structure.
    • Assist teachers in diagnosing individual student reading and writing weaknesses and match these areas of need with appropriate strategies and resources based on the Common Core State Standards.
    • Assist with disaggregating and analyzing benchmark, ITBS, and other district assessment data (MAPS, STAR, DRA, Fast For Word, etc.) to guide teachers’ instructional decisions.
    • Assist in assessing district assessments and their appropriateness to the Common Core State Standards.
    • Monitor and report effectiveness and progress of improved reading instruction and student performance to building principal and PLC teams.
    • Help make recommendations regarding instructional materials.
    • Participate in training sessions for leaders of literacy.
    Certificates/Licenses/Registrations

    Valid Illinois Professional Educator License and endorsement as a Reading Specialist.
