Responsibilities
- Work at full performance grade WG-08 level.
- Operate a variety of heavy equipment for fire suppression activities.
- Conduct suppression activities independently or under supervision as needed.
- Use heavy equipment to push, pull, pile, or load materials such as sand, gravel, and earth.
- Clear brush, tree stumps, and rocks while constructing fire lines for suppression and prescribed fire activities.
- Adjust attachments for proper level, angle, or depth according to the work and equipment type.
- Apply knowledge of fire behavior, fuels, weather, and topography to safely and effectively perform initial attacks on wildland fires.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- Males born after 12‑31‑59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.
- Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
- Successful completion of a one‑year probationary period, unless previously served.
- Adhere to direct deposit payment requirements per Public Law 104‑134.
- Successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- This is a drug‑testing designated position; candidates must pass pre‑employment and random drug testing.
- Must pass the Work Capacity Test for certain Interagency Fire Program Management or Fire Program Management positions.
- Must possess and maintain a valid commercial driver’s license.
- If selected, must register with the DOT Clearinghouse as a driver and complete the required Query Consent within 24 hours.
- Willingness to live and work in remote, volatile, or unpredictable locations.
- Additional conditions of employment may apply and will be disclosed at the time a tentative offer is made.
- Age requirements: under 37, or less than 37 after accounting for months of permanent federal service in a primary or secondary firefighter or law enforcement position, or veteran‑eligible applicants older than 37 applying for a waiver.
- Ability to perform job tasks with minimal supervision.
- Experience operating engineering and construction equipment such as graders, front‑end loaders, backhoes, trench diggers, and large industrial tractors with attachments for moving, filling, piling, or loading gravel or earth.
- Operation of motor vehicles for engineering/construction work, including maintenance of ditches, road shoulders, road beds, and firelines, and clearing terrain of brush, tree stumps, and rocks.
- Adherence to work practices that keep equipment and work areas neat, clean, and in order.
- Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, and related documentation for mobile equipment operation.
- Demonstrated safe driving practices and reliability as an engineering equipment operator.
