As a Building Maintenance Assistant in a long-term care facility, assisted living, independent living and/or memory care community, you'll assist in maintaining the physical plant, performing general maintenance tasks, and ensuring a safe and clean environment for residents and staff, under the supervision of the Building Maintenance Director.

Essential Duties and

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, including cleaning, minor repairs (e.g., changing light bulbs, fixing leaky faucets), and ensuring the facility is in good working order.
  • Conduct routine safety checks, report any hazards or needed repairs, and assist with snow and ice removal as needed.
  • Assist with cleaning and sanitation duties, including trash removal, floor care (cleaning, stripping, waxing, buffing), and maintaining a clean and organized environment.
  • Assist with maintaining the inventory of cleaning and maintenance supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and repairs.
  • Assist with coordinating with outside vendors for larger repairs and maintenance projects.
  • Respond effectively to maintenance requests, ensuring prompt and efficient repairs and addressing emergency situations.
  • Ensure adherence to local, state, and federal regulations, including building codes, OSHA, EPA, and fire safety codes.
  • Identify and resolve maintenance issues effectively, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments to ensure the smooth operation of the facility.
  • Upkeep of all interior and exterior areas.
  • Installation of new equipment, fixtures, etc.
  • Ensure compliance with fire and safety codes.
  • Maintenance or replace locks on all doors, gates, etc.
  • Maintenance and monitor CCTV cameras, alarms, and emergency call systems across common areas, entrances, and exits.
  • Routinely inspect community property for potential hazards, such as spills, fire risks, broken handrails, or water leaks.
  • Respond to community emergencies, including fires, severe weather, floods, and hazardous materials incidents. Lead evacuation efforts when necessary.
  • Check and maintain life safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, emergency lights, and fire alarms in accordance with OSHA regulations.
  • Respond to and be available for emergency calls.
  • Regularly inspect equipment, buildings and grounds to ensure a safe and comfortable environment.
  • Ensure that personnel comply with Universal Precautions, proper waste disposal and inspection control procedures and safety rules.
  • Prepare for weather emergencies, ice/snow removal, landscaping and trash pickup.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Experience with maintenance of a building such as a long-term care, apartment complex or business facility.
  • Basic knowledge of boilers, compressors, generators and various mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.
  • Basic knowledge in building codes and safety regulations.
  • Basic knowledge of building maintenance, janitorial and or maintenance work.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all resident care information.
  • Create and uphold an atmosphere of warmth, patience, enthusiasm, and a calm and cheerful environment.
  • A genuine desire to improve the quality of life for seniors.
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
