Position: Meter Reader I

SUMMARY

Reads electric and water utility meters and records volume used by residential and commercial consumers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Walks or drives a vehicle over established routes and records readings from assigned meter registers, resetting or resealing demand reset devices as necessary.
  • Participates in collecting monies or disconnecting services in the field for approximately 1,800 accounts per year that are in arrears.
  • Turns service on or off for approximately 10,300 work orders per year.
  • Utilizes meter reading and billing software to record meter readings and transfer readings for account billing of approximately 55,000 meters each month.
  • Participates in a rotating weekly after‑hours stand‑by schedule within the department.
  • Inspects meters, enclosures, and connections for defects, damage and unauthorized connections; ensures meter enclosures are properly sealed for safety and security.
  • Indicates irregularities for necessary action.
  • Operates vehicle in a courteous and safe manner at all times.
  • Maintains records, tools, vehicles, equipment and work areas in a clean, orderly and safe manner.
  • Promotes a positive image of the City by being courteous and displaying appropriate behavior.
  • Verifies readings to locate abnormal conditions, consumption, and attempts to determine reasons for unusual fluctuations.
  • Maintains awareness of surroundings and reports any new meters along assigned routes not currently in the meter‑reading device.
  • Learns and utilizes aspects of the city’s automated meter‑reading system, including field and office components.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or GED and six (6) months to one (1) year of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; and effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add and subtract two‑digit numbers and multiply and divide with tens and hundreds; perform these operations using units of American money, weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense and understand detailed but uncomplicated written or oral instructions; and to address problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills

Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook or similar software, and the ability to learn and operate a variety of software programs.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
Physical Demands

Regular use of hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Frequent standing, walking, and sitting. Must climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; occasionally taste or smell. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Extensive walking and climbing over uneven ground in all weather conditions; safe operation of a City motor vehicle over various terrains. Frequent crawling, stooping, and bending while locating and reading meters; periods of prolonged sitting and driving in City vehicles.

Work Environment

Exposure to outside weather conditions; occasional wet and/or humid environments. Moderate noise level.
