Building Maintenance Worker (8213C) Job #85794 - College of Environmental Design (CED)
The Building Maintenance Worker will provide immediate maintenance support services for CED and perform hands‑on maintenance work on CED facilities. The CED Facilities Director will assign work and will liaise with Physical Plant. Work is subject to inspection while in progress and upon completion.
Departmental OverviewThe College of Environmental Design (CED) is a diverse instructional and research design environment with multifaceted academic units: three academic departments (Architecture, City & Regional Planning, and Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning) and one academic/research unit (Institute of Urban & Regional Development), which houses 3 degree programs and oversees multidisciplinary research within the college. CED has approximately 50 senate faculty, 1,200 undergraduate and graduate students, and approximately 80 total staff.
In addition to academic activities, CED is home to research centers, fabrication services, studios, AV and computer labs, general‑use classrooms, as well as a café, library, and archives.
- 70% Regular Building Maintenance:
General (repair, replace, adjust, and/or install) screens, dry‑erase boards, bulletin boards, toilet paper dispensers and similar items; take accurate measurements and report progress to the supervisor. - Carpentry: replace, repair, adjust and/or install ceiling tiles, molding and trim, furniture, fences, gates, door jams, railings and similar items.
- Electrical: replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, with the exception of resetting breakers; incumbent must not work with live electricity.
- Walls/Ceilings (under areas 16x16): paint, patch, and repair damage as necessary; touch up and repair surfaces.
- Doors: replace, repair, adjust, and/or install closers, latches, hinges, partitions, pilasters and similar items.
- Windows, mirrors: board up and tape broken windows, tape cracks for safety prior to replacement.
- Furniture: assemble/disassemble, strip, refinish, move, and store as needed.
- Maintenance Operation Coordination: exercise care and follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using UC equipment, supplies, and hand tools; keep the Facilities office storage and various work areas clean, orderly, and safe.
- Other maintenance projects as assigned by Facilities Director/Manager.
- Refer trades‑level work to supervisor in a timely manner.
15% learns to operate and maintain a variety of power and hand tools of the various trades.
10% Purchasing: purchase, stock, and inventory supplies; specify and source parts and materials for projects; recommend/research specialized services for special projects.
5% Keep up to date with Haz‑Mat trainings and safety training as they pertain to the job.
Required Qualifications- Ability to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
- Basic mechanical aptitude; required to perform unskilled building maintenance work.
- Ability to perform basic construction math and take accurate measurements; write material lists.
- Clear verbal and written communication with customers, supervisors, and coworkers; basic record‑keeping; organize materials; handle purchase documents.
- Knowledge of buildings, building systems, and construction terminology.
- Ability to properly complete a variety of maintenance, installation, and repair tasks in a timely manner.
- Ability to read, write, and follow oral/written instructions in English.
- Understanding of the University environment, its mission, and operational needs.
- Ability to lift 75 pounds with proper tools or assistance.
- Adherence to IIPP requirements regarding safe work practices; use proper equipment; observe work practices and correct methods; follow campus safety protocol.
- Work safely and responsibly; comply with applicable policies and regulations; use personal safety gear; learn about potential hazards; report unsafe work conditions.
- Ability to access work sites, including heights, confined spaces, walk and stand for extended periods, climb ladders and stairs.
