Position: Building Maintenance Worker (8213C) Job 85794 - College of Environmental Design (CED)

About the Position

At the University of California, Berkeley, the Building Maintenance Worker in the College of Environmental Design (CED) provides immediate maintenance support services for CED facilities. The role involves hands‑on maintenance, coordination with the CED Facilities Director, and liaison with Physical Plant. Work is subject to inspection while in progress and upon completion.

Responsibilities
  • Perform regular building maintenance (70% of duties), including general repair, replacement, and installation of rooms fixtures (screens, bulletin boards, toilet paper dispensers, etc.), carpentry tasks (ceilings, molding, trim, furniture, fences, doors, railings), electrical work (light bulb replacement, fluorescent tubes, except resetting breakers), wall and ceiling repair, door adjustments, window and mirror maintenance, furniture assembly/disassembly, and maintenance operation coordination.
  • Coordinate maintenance operations, ensuring safe use of equipment and tools, cleaning and organizing storage areas.
  • Handle other maintenance projects as assigned by the Facilities Director/Manager.
  • Using a variety of power and hand tools and learning basic maintenance tasks (15% of duties).
  • Assist with purchasing supplies, stocking inventory, and sourcing parts and materials for projects (10% of duties).
  • Keep up to date with Haz‑Mat trainings and safety training as they pertain to the job (5% of duties).
  • Refer all trade‑level work to supervisor in a timely manner.
Required Qualifications
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to perform unskilled building maintenance work.
  • Ability to perform basic construction math and take accurate measurements, write material lists.
  • Effective verbal and written communication with customers, supervisors, and coworkers; perform basic record‑keeping.
  • Knowledge of building systems and construction terminology.
  • Ability to complete various maintenance, installation, and repair tasks in a timely manner.
  • Read, write, and follow oral/written instructions in English.
  • Understanding of the University environment, its mission, and operational needs.
  • Capacity to lift 75 pounds with proper tools or assistance.
  • Adherence to IIPP safety requirements, use proper equipment, observe correct methods, and campus safety protocol.
  • Work safely, responsibly, and report unsafe conditions.
  • Access to work sites, including heights, confined spaces, extended periods of walking, standing, climbing ladders and stairs.
  • High motivation, initiative, and ability to support a collaborative team environment.
  • Customer‑service attitude and appropriate communication with customers and supervisors.
Salary & Benefits
