PositionSummary
The Lead Machinist services and repairs emergency generators, all types of fans, conveyors, compressors, and pumps. They operate large mechanical tools such as lathes, radial drills, drill presses, milling machines, balancing machines, and alignment tools. They replace bearings, repair shop equipment/tools, fabricate special parts, repair vacuum pumps, hydraulic systems, sharpen tools, service diesel and gasoline engines, and autoclaves.

ResponsibilitiesTRADE EXPERTISE AND PROBLEM SOLVING - 60%
- Responsibilities include:
physical repair of campus buildings including research labs and animal facilities. - Tasks routinely performed include the following:
Specification of appropriate materials needed for each job. - Coordination of work with other shops in buildings, classrooms, research labs and animal facilities.
- Knowledge of processes and procedures utilized by each individual shop.
- Identify and resolve equipment malfunctions, work with manufacturer representatives and technical support.
- Maintain working knowledge of state-of-the-art tools and software through training and reading.
- Service, troubleshoot and repair all trade related equipment and other systems.
- Provide the end user with application information and technical support when needed.
- Coordinate warranty repairs when required.
- Responsibilities include:
reading blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, and instructions for repair and maintenance of equipment. - Uses milling, drilling, grinding and welding tools as well as other machines related to the craft.
- Troubleshoot and repair pumps, shafts, bearings, hydraulic controls and regulators.
- Equipment maintenance and repair of conveyers, vacuum pumps, and compressors.
- Maintain working knowledge of state-of-the-art tools and software through training and reading.
- Service, troubleshoot and repair all generators, engines, storage tanks and fuel delivery systems.
- Expertise in the fabrication of parts requiring exacting tolerances.
- This fabrication includes the use of calipers, welding equipment, and lathes, milling machines, drill presses, planers, balancers and grinders among others.
