FUNCTION:Under the direction of the Superintendent, Foreman, and Crew Chief of the Parks and Grounds department, provides continued grounds upkeep and maintenance for parks and school properties through skilled operation of all related grounds equipment. Assists in maintaining public facilities, and other areas in a manner that will make them readily useable and safe for the purpose intended. Maintains and operates assigned equipment and related maintenance equipment.
TYPICALDUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, TASKS & ASSIGNMENTS:
- Provides effective maintenance of public grounds including tasks of a skilled nature in the maintenance and improvement of Town parks, grounds and other facilities involving the skilled operation of all equipment used by the Department. Plants, cultivates, sprays, trims, waters, weeds, fertilizes and cares for turf, shrubs, trees and flower beds.
- Operates service vehicles, such as mowers, tractors, gang mowers and related power equipment. Also operates trucks, loaders, skid steer, saws and a variety of other power tools used in the maintenance of school properties, pools, grounds, and recreational facilities. Operates heavy equipment as necessary.
- Repairs and implements preventative maintenance procedures for equipment used in Parks and Grounds operations, performs general seasonal maintenance and repair work on irrigation systems, playgrounds, pools, parks, school properties, facilities and open space; and performs related work as required.
- Maintains and repairs athletic fields, parks, swimming pools, and other public facilities, ensuring that fields and other athletic facilities are available and properly marked.
- Performs trash removal and picks up litter at all town parks and school properties. Loads and hauls debris. Reports any grounds maintenance and/or property repair needs to supervisor(s) to ensure the safety and quality of all public grounds.
- Maintains and observes all safety policies and procedures to ensure safe work conditions and reduce hazards at all times. Practices energy conservation. Reports areas of concern to supervisor(s).
- Oversees, trains, and supervises seasonal and summer employees as necessary. Assists other employees as necessary.
- Performs snow removal, salting and sanding operations for roads, parking lots, sidewalks, and fire houses as needed.
- Responds to calls for duty at irregular hours to cope with emergency situations.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
High School diploma required. Extensive knowledge of materials, methods and equipment used in the maintenance of grounds, bushes, tree removal roads, parking lots and walkways, as required. Knowledge of the operation and repair of grounds equipment, including hydraulics, plus a minimum of three years related experience required. Must have the ability to attain a valid CT Applicators License as well as valid Commercial Driver’s license.
PHYSICALAND WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment involves extremely high risks with exposure to potentially life-threatening situations or unusual environmental stress, which requires a full range of safety and other precautions. Much of the work is outside in adverse conditions. The work requires physical exertion such as walking over rough or difficult terrain; recurring standing, stooping, climbing or walking. Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds, may be required to occasionally lift over 75 pounds.
