Position Overview

The School Nurse promotes the physical and mental health of students to support their academic success. Through health education, prevention strategies, screenings, and health management, the School Nurse helps students develop healthy habits, prevent illness, and manage medical conditions within the school environment.

This position is currently assigned as a 1:1 nurse supporting an individual student, ensuring the student's medical needs are safely managed throughout the school day.

School nurses implement both primary and secondary prevention strategies
, including health education, screenings, referrals, and follow‑up services to address student health concerns early and support overall student well‑being (NASN, 2016).

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or related field
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Minimum of three (3) years of nursing experience, preferably in a school setting
  • BLS/CPR Certification

    IDPH Vision and Hearing Screening Certification
  • Knowledge of child development and characteristics of healthy children
  • Knowledge of Illinois physical and immunization requirements for students
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Cultural competency and commitment to supporting diverse student populations
  • Proficiency with technology and related software applications
Preferred Qualifications
  • Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with School Nurse Endorsement
  • Two years of hospital experience
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of student health information
  • Maintain knowledge of current laws, regulations, and best practices in school health services
  • Ensure compliance with Illinois physical, immunization, and health requirements
  • Provide emergency care and first aid for injured or ill students in grades Pre‑K–8
  • Maintain and update student health records and medical documentation

    Conduct student health screenings as required by state guidelines
  • Complete accident and incident reports as necessary
  • Provide guidance and resources to administrators regarding student health and wellness
  • Respond to parent, student, and staff health concerns with professionalism and care
  • Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings by completing health assessments and conducting parent interviews for initial, annual, and triennial evaluations
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and relevant networking events
  • Starting at $64,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications.
