Job Summary: In order to maximize safety as well as satisfaction for childbearing families laboring and birthing in the Center, birth assistant functions are as follows.
1) Directly assist the CNM in caring for the family during labor.
2) Act as an additional “pair of hands” during births and or emergencies.
3) Directly assist the family immediately following birth and during the post‑partum period.
- Read and understand the Center’s policies and procedures manual.
- Keep answering service informed on availability and arrive within one hour of being called.
- Intrapartum care (at CNM’s direction):
- Labor support (fluids, positioning, tub bath, sibling support).
- Supplies and equipment for room set‑up.
- Monitoring of vital signs and fetal heart tones.
- Delivery assistance as needed.
- Resuscitation assistance if required.
- Third‑stage or other maternal emergency (fundal massage, administration of oxytocin, IV therapy, call physician or ambulance).
- Assist in early labor under CNM direction.
- Immediate postpartum care:
- Vital signs.
- Assessment of fundus and bleeding.
- Comfort measures for mother.
- Assist mother and newborn with establishing breastfeeding.
- Cord blood to lab if indicated.
- Postpartum period until discharge:
- Ongoing assessment of mother: bleeding, voiding, fluids and eating, adjustment, physical needs.
- Newborn assessment: respiratory status, color, temperature, neurological status, feeding, activity.
- Discharge:
- Review early home‑care instructions.
- Assist family in preparations for going home.
- Schedule home visit.
- Accompany family to car and assist with proper installation of infant car seat.
- Terminal cleaning and restocking of birth room before leaving.
- Ongoing postpartum follow‑up:
- Perform home visits as needed.
- Consultation with CNM for problems.
- Continuing competency:
- Maintain current certification in CPR and neonatal resuscitation.
- Attend Center staff in‑service programs and emergency drills.
- Participate in transfer review meetings and assist in in‑service programs.
- Schedule includes 11 (24‑hour) calls per month.
- Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Constant communication with patients, families, and other healthcare providers.
- 2 – 3 years clinical experience preferred.
- 2 – 3 years EMR experience preferred.
- Proficient in MS Office Business Applications:
- Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel.
- Current and valid State of Illinois nurse’s license.
- Current and valid CPR card.
- Remain stationary 50% of the time.
- Move around clinic site 50% of the time.
- Operate computer, printer, copier, telephone.
- Move objects of 10 pounds from one level to another.
- Perform nursing skills: wound care, injections, other procedures.
- Transport between sites.
- Cover other shifts as necessary.
- Proficient reading and writing in English.
- Constant communication with other healthcare providers.
- Follow‑through responsibility and good judgment.
- Maintain professionalism under stress.
- Self‑motivated and directed; prioritize and work efficiently under pressure.
- Understand and follow verbal and written communication.
- Detail oriented, work with minimal or no supervision.
- Willingness to cooperate in team‑unit and departmental goals.
- Effective and creative problem solving.
