District Float Custodian

Job Description

Under the supervision of the Director of Buildings and Grounds, performs a variety of custodial, cleaning and general maintenance duties to ensure buildings and facilities are safe, clean and well maintained across the district.

• Building:
  District
• Shift: First (6:00 AM - 3:00 PM)
• 40 hours per week

• Performs various maintenance and custodial coverage duties across the district, covering all 8 schools
• Paints interior and exterior wall and trim
• Maintains and repairs wood parts of buildings
• Repairs or replaces building brick, stone and concrete
• Makes minor building repairs
• Keeps the grounds free from rubbish
• Reports major repairs to the Director and Assistant Director of Buildings & Grounds
• Uses a power lift to perform some tasks
• Must get along well with others and deal effectively with principals, teachers, students and visitors
• Locks and unlocks doors
• Checks the security of the building and grounds
• Sweeps and wet and dry mop floors
• Waxes floor and operates buffing machines
• Vacuums and cares for carpeting
• Washes windows and furniture
• Cleans restrooms using appropriate equipment and supplies
• Mops and buffs the cafeteria
• Moves furniture, folds and unfolds chairs as required
• Picks up paper and debris from school grounds
• Checks heating and air conditioning for proper operation
• Contacts Plant Services for after-hour emergencies
• Raises and lowers flags
• Delivers packages and messages
• Make minor repairs to equipment and furniture as needed
• Load and unload delivery trucks
• Models’ nondiscriminatory practices in all activities

• Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Director of Building and Grounds or their designees.
• Shovels snow from sidewalks during inclement weather
• Fills in for Day Custodians when they are out
• Is flexible to cover other schools when needed including both first and overtime on second shifts

• Works under general supervision
• Performs diversified maintenance and custodial duties under specific instructions
• and with a minimum of judgment required as to methods or procedures
• Self-motivated and proactive

• Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and temperatures
• Requires standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, reaching and lifting throughout the workday
• Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of equipment, furniture, supplies and materials
• Regular use of custodial, maintenance, and groundskeeping equipment and tools
• Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, dirt, noise and other environmental conditions commonly associated with custodial and maintenance work
• May be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, or overtime as needed, including emergency response for weather events, building issues or other urgent situations
• Must adhere to established safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment when required

• High school diploma or equivalent

• Compensation is set in accordance with the City of Beverly Custodians collective bargaining agreement.

• Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a CORI and SORI background check and fingerprint-based national criminal history check, in accordance with Massachusetts law.
• In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
• Pre-employment drug test and physical examination is required, including the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
