Maintenance Worker Supervisor

Position Title:

Maintenance Worker Supervisor –

This position is part of the Parks & Outdoor Recreation Division and serves as a member of the regional maintenance team. The Maintenance Supervisor reports to the Regional Maintenance Manager and aids the regional maintenance program for fishing access sites, wildlife management areas, state parks, and administrative facilities. In coordination with the Regional Maintenance Manager, Stewardship Bureau Chief, and regional staff, the position identifies maintenance needs, establishes workflows for regular or routine tasks, and assists in establishing priorities for major maintenance projects.

Effective communication and relationship building is an important component of this position to ensure maintenance needs are addressed for all department sites and facilities in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

Key Responsibilities
  • Directly coordinate, oversee, and participate in the maintenance program of state parks, fishing access sites, wildlife management areas, administrative buildings at regional headquarters, and all related land, support facilities and utility systems of the region through organizational, administrative, supervisory, and skilled duties as assigned.
  • Assist with hiring and leading regional seasonal and temporary maintenance staff.
  • Monitor employees' work levels and review work performance.
  • Provide counseling to employees about work-related issues and assist employees to correct job-skill deficiencies.
  • Work collaboratively to achieve maintenance and operations goals.
  • Oversee the direction and performance of skilled repairs, maintenance, inspections, and stabilization work on site structures, administrative buildings, and all related land, support facilities, and utility systems.
  • Provide guidance and directions to staff and contractors conducting various types of maintenance work based on directions from the Regional Maintenance Manager.
Maintenance Oversight Responsibilities

Habitat maintenance such as fertilizing, farming, tree planting, mowing, managing large scale irrigation systems and waterfowl nesting structures; public drinking water distribution systems; waste water systems; HVAC systems; vault latrine and full service flush toilet and hot water shower facilities; public visitor centers with exhibits including audio visual systems and specialty lighting; building security and fire protection systems; historic sites and structures;

landscaped areas with irrigation systems; campgrounds with electrical distribution systems; picnic shelters; boat docks and ramps; solid rail and wire fences; paved and gravel roadways and parking areas; paved and aggregate surfaced trails; boardwalks; directional, information and interpretive signs, kiosks; maintenance shop facilities and other associated infrastructure.

Typical Field Work

Most of the work involves field work under adverse weather and environmental conditions, which may include temperature extremes and occasional weekend, evening, and holiday hours, including occasional overtime. Some office and computer work is required.

Skills and Abilities
  • Leading work crews and actively overseeing field-based work of subordinate maintenance and groundskeeper staff.
  • Managing budgets relating to maintenance program management as well as individual projects.
  • Safely following all traffic and state laws and towing a trailer with proper towing and safety protocols.
  • Proficient training and leadership skills regarding all safety protocols and standards, including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Effective communication and administrative skills, both verbal and written.
  • Working knowledge of methods and practices of general maintenance and construction work related to buildings, facilities and grounds, use and care of tools, and operation of a variety of heavy and light construction equipment.
  • Ability to use spreadsheets and other programs for maintenance logs and personnel reports (proficient in MS Office, especially Excel).
  • Commercial driver’s license (ability to obtain) if applicable in certain circumstances.
