Primary Function
The Aircraft Mechanic I APG Crew Chief is responsible for assessing aircraft damage and drafting repair procedures for aircraft structural and composite components. Must be able to utilize advanced metalworking practices and techniques to form, cut, bend, and fasten new or repair components to damaged structures. Must be proficient in close‑tolerance drilling/reaming for installation of high‑strength fasteners and be able to use both powered and non‑powered metalworking tooling and equipment.
Responsibilities- Inspect and assess damage to aircraft structural components and formulate proper repair or replacement procedures using applicable technical data.
- Remove and install close‑tolerance, high‑strength fasteners in major aircraft structural components.
- Advise on structural repair, modification, and corrosion protection treatment with respect to original strength, weight, and contour to maintain structural integrity.
- Perform post‑repair flight control weight and balance functions as well as control surface rigging per designated technical orders.
- Inspect components and repairs for structural serviceability according to specifications and technical publications.
- Manufacture and use jigs, fixtures, forms, and molds to fabricate repair or replacement parts.
- Use advanced metalworking practices, equipment, and tools to form, cut, bend, and fasten replacement or repair parts to damaged structures and components.
- Apply shop drawing and metal layout techniques, shop mathematics, corrosion identification, removal, repair, and prevention, cleaning of metals, and application of protective coatings and markings.
- Close completed maintenance discrepancies in automated maintenance systems.
- Document maintenance in accordance with Quality Assurance (QA) and established regulatory requirements.
- Store, handle, and dispose of hazardous waste and materials according to environmental standards and company processes.
- Operate and maintain related aircraft Support Equipment (SE).
- Use automated maintenance systems to monitor maintenance trends, analyze equipment requirements, maintain equipment records, document maintenance actions, and manage the time‑change database.
- Perform regular Foreign Object Damage (FOD) walks.
- Maintain strict tool control procedures; report missing, lost, found, or unattended tools to the supervisor; inventory and inspect tools on a regular basis and replace worn or broken tools.
- Comply with safety rules and regulations while performing day‑to‑day maintenance and promptly report all accidents, injuries, safety violations, or unsafe practices to the supervisor.
- Maintain equipment records by entering the description of the work performed and verifying that the work was performed satisfactorily.
Skills And Abilities
- Knowledgeable in depot‑level processes and procedures for replacement of major structural components.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as engineering drawings, technical documentation, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Good decision‑analysis and problem‑solving skills; able to draw conclusions and justify decisions and communicate issues to management.
- Able to use Microsoft Office Suite and other computer programs; advanced software knowledge is preferred.
- Knowledgeable of fixed‑wing aircraft construction features and aerospace materials, including proper use, mixing, and storage of acids, solvents, alcohol, caustics, primers, and paints; and proper handling and disposal of hazardous waste.
- Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures for depot fabrication, repair, and replacement of metal components, tubing, cable, plastic, fiberglass, bonded honeycomb, and composite structural components.
- Must be able to utilize respirator, forced‑air, or other breathing equipment during the performance of assigned duties.
- Ability to enter data accurately into databases.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Interpersonal skills to work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of management and staff, and to routinely interact with other crew members.
