Position: Automotive/Heavy Equipment Shop Supervisor - City of Birmingham

Job Summary

The City of Birmingham is seeking a well-qualified, motivated Automotive/Heavy Equipment Shop Supervisor. This role oversees the repair, service, and maintenance of gasoline‑ and diesel‑powered vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment. The Supervisor directs shop personnel, plans and assigns work, establishes maintenance standards, and ensures equipment remains safe, serviceable, and operational. This position exercises independent judgment in coordinating daily shop operations, managing inventory and supplies, maintaining records, resolving technical and personnel issues, and keeping leadership informed of progress and significant matters.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Driver's license.
  • Coursework, certification, or experience using scan tools or a computer to diagnose problems.
  • Coursework, certification, or experience diagnosing and repairing brake systems.
  • Coursework, certification, or experience diagnosing front and/or rear suspension problems (e.g. inside tire wear, trailer arms, tie rod, upper and lower control arms, differentials).
  • Coursework, certification, or experience using fleet management software (e.g. Fleet Anywhere, ULL, Incode, Fleetvision).
  • Experience interpreting automotive/heavy equipment diagnostic information for various target audiences (e.g. department heads, vendors, subordinates).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Commercial driver's license (Some jurisdictions may require this license within 180 days of hire).
  • ASE Certifications.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Supervisory, management or lead worker experience.

Job Duties
  • Automotive maintenance and repair coordination and tracking:
    Maintains programs and procedures to track the maintenance, repair, and usage of fleet vehicles and equipment and to ensure compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, and budgetary procedures.
  • Automotive Work Orders and Reports:
    Writes and reviews work orders, reports, and memos regarding auto shop activities and documents on the job accidents and injuries.
  • Prepares, monitors, and administers departmental or organizational budget by reviewing spending trends, expenditure reports, analyzing financial data and ensuring expenditures are within annual budgetary limits.
  • Directs automotive maintenance and repairs:
    Oversees maintenance and repairs on rolling stock, equipment, and/or facilities.
  • Procures and/or manages inventory (i.e., supplies and equipment) to ensure the products and services are available to meet the operational needs of each department.
  • Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
Physical Demands

Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of light physical activity such as walking or standing. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

Work Environment

Work is performed both in an indoor office setting and in an employer‑owned automotive workshop. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer and phone as well as the occasional use of electrical, gas, or air powered tools and equipment such as a pneumatic wrench. Exposure to contaminants such as dust, gasoline, and/or caustic chemicals, and to potential mechanical and moving vehicle hazards is common.

Work involves exposure to extreme temperatures (hot and cold), working around uneven, cluttered, and slippery surfaces, high vibration, and loud noise (e.g. industrial and repair equipment).
