Blue Island Recycling, LLC is seeking an experienced, safety-focused Material Handler/Crane Operator to join our Day Shift operations team.
This position is responsible for operating mobile material handlers and scrap handling cranes to sort, process, load, and move ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal throughout our recycling facility. Equipment operated may include Liebherr 944, Sennebogen 825, and Sennebogen 835 material handlers equipped with grapples and magnets.
The ideal candidate will have experience operating material handlers, excavators, cranes, or similar heavy equipment in a scrap recycling, demolition, waste, aggregate, steel, or industrial environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES- Safely operate Liebherr and Sennebogen material handlers
- Sort, process, and move ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal
- Feed shredder and other processing equipment as directed
- Load and unload trucks
- Maintain efficient material flow throughout the yard
- Operate grapples, magnets, and other material handling attachments
- Perform daily preshift and postshift equipment inspections
- Report equipment deficiencies and maintenance concerns promptly
- Follow all company safety policies and operating procedures
- Assist with general yard operations as needed
- Maintain a clean, well‑organized, and safe work area
- Perform other duties as assigned by management
- Previous experience operating material handlers, cranes, excavators, or similar heavy equipment required
- Scrap recycling experience strongly preferred
- Experience operating Sennebogen, Liebherr, Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hitachi, or similar equipment preferred
- Ability to safely operate grapple and magnet attachments
- Strong understanding of safe material handling practices
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Dependable attendance and punctuality required
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong awareness of surroundings and commitment to workplace safety
- Monday through Friday (Saturdays as needed based on operational requirements)
- Typical hours are 6:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Schedule is subject to operational needs and may vary.
Compensation is competitive and will be based on experience, qualifications, equipment proficiency, and overall fit for the position.

- Must wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
- Must have their own pair of steeltoe safety boots on their first day of work
- Must be able to work around moving equipment, heavy materials, and industrial processing operations
