Night Custodian

Blue Springs, Missouri -  School year

Position Summary

The Night Custodian supports the educational process by providing custodial services at the assigned site, ensuring an attractive, sanitary, and safe environment for students, staff, and visitors. Duties include special cleaning operations and assisting in preparing facilities for classroom activities and campus events.

Position Type: Full-Time (260 day, 8 hrs./day) benefits eligible

Salary: $40,771 – $53,251 (commensurate with experience)

Essential Functions
  • Assist with snow removal to ensure access and safety.
  • Attend unit meetings, in‑service training, workshops, and other meetings for professional development.
  • Clean assigned facilities and/or grounds (classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, pools, and grounds) to maintain a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment.
  • Deliver items (supplies, mail, packages, furniture, etc.) to appropriate parties on site.
  • Inform students and site personnel about activities, safety issues, and proper maintenance of facilities and equipment.
  • Monitor students and staff in and around work areas to prevent injuries and ensure site safety.
  • Perform summer maintenance (strip/wax floors, move furniture, painting, etc.) to facilitate summer construction.
  • Prepare the site for daily operations (open gates, raise flags, sweep walkways, etc.) to ensure facilities are operational and hazard‑free.
  • Replenish classroom and restroom supplies (paper towels, soap, etc.) to keep adequate levels for daily use.
  • Respond to inquiries from staff, students, parents, and/or visitors by providing information, taking appropriate action, and/or directing to the proper personnel.
  • Respond to immediate safety or operational concerns (facility damage, vandalism, alarms, etc.) by taking appropriate action or notifying relevant personnel.
  • Secure facilities and grounds (doors, gates, alarms, lights, etc.) to minimize property damage, equipment loss, and potential liability.
  • Support other site maintenance staff (grounds, trades, etc.) to complete custodial activities.
Other Functions
  • Perform related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

Skills

  • Operate industrial cleaning equipment, electrical cleaning equipment, and common tools.
  • Adhere to safety practices.

Knowledge

  • Basic math (fractions, percentages, ratios).
  • Read and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Methods of industrial cleaning and safety practices and procedures.

Ability

  • Schedule activities and collate data.
  • Consider multiple factors when using equipment.
  • Work flexibly with others in varying circumstances.
  • Operate equipment using standardized methods.
  • Work with a diverse group of individuals and job‑related data.
  • Identify issues and select action plans (moderate problem‑solving).
  • Adapt to changing work priorities, communicate with diverse groups, meet deadlines, work as part of a team, and handle constant interruptions.
Responsibility

Work under direct supervision using standardized procedures, provide information and/or advise others, and operate within a defined budget. The role offers a continual opportunity to impact the organization’s services.

Work Environment

Physical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. Typical time distribution: 5% sitting, 50% walking, 45% standing. The noise level is moderate to loud. The environment is generally clean and healthy.

Experience

Job‑related experience desired.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Background Check
