The Head Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and functional campus environment that supports student learning and staff productivity. This leadership role involves supervising daily custodial operations, coordinating staff schedules and duties, and ensuring all facilities meet district standards for cleanliness and safety. The role oversees routine cleaning, preventative maintenance, and emergency response efforts, working closely with campus administration and district maintenance teams, and serves as a liaison among custodial staff, school leadership, and the broader maintenance department.
Minimum Requirements- High school diploma or GED equivalent recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency
- Five (5) years of custodial experience or equivalent
- Valid Driver License with a good driving record (meet and maintain liability coverage eligibility by BISD Carrier)
- Satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check
- Managerial/leadership experience
- Experience in building and grounds operations
- Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Spanish
- Ability to clearly and accurately record information
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to perform the essential job functions
- Ability to perform minor maintenance repairs
- Ability to handle cleaning supplies
- Knowledge of custodial equipment, cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures
- Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Key Responsibilities
- Effectively plan and coordinate custodial activities, prepare work schedules, and supervise day/night shift staff according to district procedures
- Promote efficiency, morale, teamwork, and interaction with fellow staff members
- Direct and assist in setting up facilities for special events
- Acquire supplies and custodial equipment, maintain inventory control, and manage service levels and budget within established procedures
- Ensure cleanliness and proper maintenance of the building and grounds
- Implement and maintain an established cleaning schedule—including floors, whiteboards, waste baskets, windows, furniture, equipment, walls, and restrooms
- Keep school building and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas, neat and clean
- Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash
- Supervise and assist custodial personnel with ground maintenance, parking lots, fence lines, playground areas, equipment, lawn, shrubs, trees, and flower beds
- Train custodial personnel to use safe and proper work/cleaning techniques, including inside/outside power equipment required to support programs
- Make the campus/building available for maintenance repairs and activities, minimizing interference with curricular and extracurricular activities during duty hours
- Maintain and supervise proper use of personal protective equipment, and report incidents to the principal, authorities, and HR as needed
- Ensure compliance with the Texas Hazardous Communications Act, including staff training and safety of chemicals
- Make minor building repairs and report major repairs promptly
- Ensure all doors and windows are locked and secure
- Follow established safety procedures for lifting, climbing, and operating equipment
