Position: Boise State University – – Custodian Lead worker (Day Shift)

Job Summary

Position yourself for growth as a Custodial Lead worker, a key leadership role acting as second-in-command for one of our custodial crew. This position is ideal for a dedicated professional who excels at physical, heavy‑duty custodial work and wants to set a high bar for team performance. While the supervisor manages administrative duties, you will focus on training staff, troubleshooting on the floor, and ensuring project logistics run smoothly.

You will also maintain operational continuity by covering supervisory duties as needed, making you a critical asset to our leadership team.

Primary shift hours: 6 am – 2:30 pm.

Shift days: Tuesday – Saturday and Monday – Friday (rotating every 6 months).

Essential Functions
  • Explain priorities for completion of projects; resolve problems associated with staff assignments; schedule jobs to be accomplished; ensure safe working conditions for clients and staff; train properly and safely to perform custodial services and operate/maintain equipment; review work to ensure compliance with standards; assist with the preparation of performance evaluations; keep records of employees’ hours worked; inventory supplies and materials; ensure room availability and event schedules are followed.
  • Perform and lead others in heavy‑duty cleaning: clean, sanitize, and polish fixtures; dust, mop, woodwork, walls, windows, and glass; remove waste and debris; select products and cleaning compounds; measure and mix compounds, disinfectants, and sanitizing agents and apply them according to procedures or manufacturers’ specifications; order supplies for custodial closets; sweep and mop/auto scrub floors; set up tables, chairs, and similar items for events;

    may assist with stripping and waxing of floors; move furniture, appliances, and other heavy items; set up and climb ladders and scaffolding; shovel snow; report building maintenance needs; perform a variety of duties to ensure facility operation including setting-up bleachers, portable flooring, tables, and chairs for special events; provide direction and answer basic questions regarding events for patrons; and set‑up and prepare audio/visual equipment and related aids for use.
  • Operate scrubbers, buffers, carpet cleaners, vacuums, and wet/dry pickup machines; perform routine and preventive maintenance on cleaning equipment; finish floors using buffers, chemical stripping agents, and final finishing waxes; use snow blowers, dollies, and carts; replace belts, brushes, and bearings in power equipment; ensure that floor and building area is secured including doors locked and lights and appliances off; report fire hazards, other emergencies.
  • May perform other duties as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.
  • Ability to inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems.
  • Ability to monitor building premises to ensure occupant and visitor safety.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Good knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in heavy‑duty custodial work, including related safety practices; cleaning agents and related products and their possible reactions.
  • Some knowledge of supervisory practices; sanitation and infection control; training methods used in custodial work.
  • Experience operating industrial‑type high‑speed cleaning equipment; performing minor maintenance on custodial equipment; using hand tools to repair cleaning equipment; explaining the use and maintenance of custodial equipment.
  • A valid Driver’s License is required.
Salary and Benefits

Salary: $19.38/hr.

Benefits include:

  • 12 paid holidays; the university is closed between Christmas and New Year’s (requires use of 3 vacation days).
