Position: Materials Handler (Wildland Fire)

Summary

This is a Direct‑Hire advertisement. Veterans preference is not applicable. The Materials Handler (Wildland Fire) position is with the US Wildland Fire Service, WG‑6907‑6, and is based in Boise, Idaho.

Major Duties
  • Receive and store a wide variety of NFES wildland fire materials (equipment and supplies), including new, refurbished, and hazardous products.
  • Assemble or repair basic wildland fire supply kits from individual components according to NFES standards.
  • Assist in evaluating and monitoring stock levels and turnover rates to ensure adequate supplies in primary warehouses, coordinating item transfers from secondary warehouses and temporary staging areas.
  • Independently examine and identify the condition of NFES wildland fire materials.
  • Pack, label, and ship NFES wildland fire materials in accordance with national standard packaging requirements and applicable operating procedures.
  • Operate forklifts, stock pickers, stake‑bed trucks, enclosed box vans, cargo vans, and various types of banding and packaging equipment.
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Suitability for Federal employment, as determined by background investigation.
  • Direct Deposit Required.
  • Must submit to a drug test and receive a negative result prior to appointment; position subject to random drug testing.
  • Incumbent must operate a motor vehicle as part of official duties and hold a valid state driver’s license for the duration of employment.
  • Must serve a 1‑year probationary period during which fitness and public‑interest advancement are evaluated.
  • Individuals assigned male at birth after 12‑31‑59 must register for Selective Service (visit SSS.gov).
  • May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.
  • Frequent extended travel up to 25% of time, especially during fire season; must obtain a government charge card for travel.
  • Training and maintenance of government charge card or travel and/or purchase authority may be required.
