Maintenance Technician

This role provides hands-on facilities maintenance support for a veterans residential building in downtown Boston. The Maintenance Technician ensures that common areas, event spaces, tenant units, and rooftop spaces remain safe, functional, and well-maintained through a broad range of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and general repair tasks. You will receive initial training on first shift with an experienced maintenance manager before transitioning to your regular schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair common areas, event spaces, tenant spaces, and rooftop areas to ensure they remain safe, clean, and fully operational.
  • Perform routine facilities maintenance tasks, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and general repairs as needed.
  • Diagnose and repair plumbing issues such as toilets, clogged or slow drains, and leaks using appropriate tools and methods, including snaking drains.
  • Repair and maintain appliances including stoves, ovens, microwaves, and other common residential equipment.
  • Perform light electrical work, including troubleshooting and repairing ballasts, smoke detectors, and light fixtures.
  • Carry out light carpentry and drywall work, including patching, minor framing repairs, and cosmetic fixes in tenant and common spaces.
  • Conduct temperature checks and basic monitoring of boilers, hot water heaters, and rooftop units (RTUs) to support safe and efficient operation.
  • Replace filters and perform basic preventive maintenance on HVAC and related building systems as directed.
  • Respond to maintenance requests from tenants and building staff in a timely, professional, and customer-focused manner.
  • Document work performed and communicate any major issues or recurring problems to the maintenance manager or appropriate building personnel.
  • Support the overall upkeep of a 135,000-square-foot, older downtown building by regularly walking the property, inspecting spaces, and identifying maintenance needs.
  • Work scheduled shifts (Wednesday–Friday 3:00 p.m.–11:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 2:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m., or an alternative 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. schedule if approved) and provide coverage as required.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience in facilities maintenance or a similar maintenance technician role.
  • Hands-on skills in plumbing, including working with toilets, snaking drains, and fixing leaks.
  • Experience repairing common residential appliances such as stoves, ovens, and microwaves.
  • Ability to perform light electrical work, including fixing ballasts, smoke detectors, and light fixtures.
  • Basic HVAC knowledge, including performing temperature checks on boilers, hot water heaters, and RTUs.
  • Mechanical aptitude and strong troubleshooting skills across building systems.
  • Ability to perform light carpentry and drywall work, including patching and minor repairs.
  • Strong customer service skills and comfort interacting directly with tenants in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Ability to walk throughout a large building for extended periods, including frequent use of stairs.
  • Willingness and availability to work an afternoon and evening schedule (Wednesday–Friday 3:00 p.m.–11:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 2:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m.), or a 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. schedule if mutually agreed.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in a residential or multifamily building environment.
  • Familiarity with maintaining and troubleshooting systems in older buildings.
  • Experience with basic preventive maintenance routines on boilers, hot water heaters, and HVAC equipment.
  • Comfort working independently after initial training and following established procedures and safety practices.
  • Strong communication skills to clearly explain issues and solutions to tenants and building staff.
