Canopy Boston Downtown is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Director of Engineering to lead the hotel's Engineering operation.
This is a key leadership role responsible for the overall maintenance, safety, functionality, and physical condition of the hotel. The Director of Engineering will provide strategic leadership across all building systems, including mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, life safety, energy management, preventive maintenance, capital projects, technology systems, and emergency preparedness.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineering leader with strong technical knowledge, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to lead teams, manage projects, control budgets, and maintain Hilton brand standards while ensuring an exceptional environment for guests, team members, tenants, and community partners.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct regular property walk-throughs to evaluate the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the hotel's physical structure, mechanical systems, electrical systems, HVAC systems, and related equipment.
- Oversee and verify completion of routine preventive maintenance, repairs, replacements, and renovation projects throughout guest areas, public spaces, meeting rooms, outlets, back-of-house areas, offices, employee spaces, and hotel grounds.
- Recruit, train, supervise, schedule, develop, and manage Engineering team members, including mechanics, painters, groundskeepers, and other maintenance personnel.
- Oversee Engineering-related hotel systems, equipment, technology, rehabilitation projects, expansions, renovations, and special projects.
- Lead the Hilton Quality Assurance (QA) program for the Engineering Department, ensuring compliance with Hilton brand standards, Engineering requirements, life safety standards, and Quality Assurance inspections.
- Develop and manage corrective action plans related to QA inspections and ensure all identified deficiencies are completed in a timely manner.
- Maintain strong professional relationships with hotel tenants and serve as the primary Engineering contact for maintenance requests, inspections, repairs, operational requirements, and building-related concerns.
- Maintain an active relationship with the Haymarket Association, representing the hotel in meetings, community initiatives, neighborhood activities, improvement projects, and operational matters impacting the property.
- Lead the hotel's Health & Safety Program, ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations, Hilton standards, state and local codes, and company safety policies.
- Conduct safety inspections, risk assessments, incident investigations, training programs, and corrective action initiatives.
- Lead and maintain the hotel's Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan, including emergency procedures, evacuation plans, drills, training, and response coordination.
- Coordinate emergency response efforts with hotel leadership, the local Fire Department, Police Department, Emergency Management agencies, and other public safety officials.
- Regularly advise the General Manager and department heads regarding the condition of the property, equipment, systems, capital needs, operational risks, and cost-effective maintenance recommendations.
- Prepare and manage Utility, Capital Projects, and Repair & Maintenance budgets.
- Monitor monthly departmental expenditures, contractor costs, purchasing, payroll, project schedules, and budget performance.
- Manage outside contractors, bids, purchasing controls, capital projects, renovations, and project schedules.
- Maintain effective Energy Management and Preventive Maintenance programs.
- Monitor energy consumption and identify opportunities to improve efficiency while maintaining guest comfort and operational standards.
- Provide technical and safety training to other hotel departments regarding the safe and efficient use of equipment.
- Maintain confidentiality and protect company systems, passwords, records, and operational data.
- Review and manage key operational reports, including Daily Audit Reports, Daily Labor Reports, BVCW, meter readings, P&L and utility variance reports, monthly maintenance reports, Defect Tracker, M.O.D. reports, Hilton Quality Assurance Action Plans, Health & Safety Inspection Reports, and Emergency Preparedness and Drill Reports.
The successful candidate will possess strong technical expertise and leadership experience with the ability to manage a complex hospitality Engineering operation.
Candidates should have:
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems, refrigeration, HVAC, boilers, mechanical systems, plumbing, heating, and associated maintenance and repair.
- Excellent knowledge of public building construction, building systems, permits, licensing requirements, fire safety requirements, and applicable building codes.
- Knowledge of Hilton Quality Assurance standards, Engineering brand requirements, and corrective action processes preferred.
