Custodian - Temporary - (260003L6)
This position is 2PM-10PM Monday-Friday Temporary up to six (6) months.
Position SummaryThe Custodian will be responsible for a range of cleaning and maintenance tasks within the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office facilities.
Supervision ReceivedReceives general direction and oversight from the Director of Facilities in performing duties in accordance with all best practices and established guidelines.
Duties and Responsibilities- Keeps the facility clean and orderly condition by performing assigned tasks or additional custodian duties as needed.
- Ensures floor cleanliness through sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming; operates equipment for floor maintenance, including buffing and waxing. Additionally, performs deep cleaning of carpeted office areas.
- Cleans the interiors and exteriors of windows, as well as walls and other interior surfaces of the buildings.
- Reports irregular activities and advises supervisor of conditions requiring major maintenance or repair.
- Empties waste receptacles and disposes of rubbish.
- Dusts and polishes furniture.
- Performs decontamination of cells and general areas as required.
- Conducts periodic deep cleaning of dishwashers, pulpers, and other kitchen equipment.
- Maintains cleanliness of restrooms and restocks supplies.
- When necessary, assists with the loading and unloading of supplies and/or equipment, moving furniture, or setting up for special events.
- Performs landscaping duties such as mowing lawns and snow removal as needed.
- Performs minor upkeep of facility by painting and assisting with minor repairs.
- Assists licensed trades workers as needed.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Organized with attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to prioritize and problem solve in a high‑pressure environment.
- Accurately assesses custodial problems of a routine nature and initiates corrective action.
- Working knowledge of custodial practices.
- Ability to follow oral and written directions.
- Ability to utilize custodial equipment and chemicals.
- Ability to work independently and perform assigned tasks.
- Ability to work with other members of the facility department with necessary.
- A High School Diploma or equivalent certificate is required.
- A minimum of three (3) years of custodial experience is required; experience with large system custodial services is preferred but not required.
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience working in a correctional facility is preferred but not required.
- A valid driver's license is required.
