Custodian / Maintenance Technician (FT), Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Boston, MA
The Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston is looking to hire two full-time Custodian / Maintenance Technicians. They will be responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, functional, and welcoming environment throughout the parish, office, and ministry facilities. This role supports daily operations through custodial services, routine maintenance, minor repairs, event setup/breakdown, and ongoing monitoring of building conditions. The ideal candidate is dependable, proactive, service-oriented, and takes pride in maintaining facilities that reflect care, hospitality, and stewardship.
Custodian& Cleaning Responsibilities
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, offices, meeting spaces, hallways, stairwells, and common areas
- Remove all trash from the first floor of the rectory daily
- Small custodial tasks as needed within the rectory
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and maintain floors and surfaces
- Empty trash and recycling receptacles and ensure proper disposal
- Replenish restroom and facility supplies (soap, paper towels, toilet paper, etc.)
- Clean windows, doors, entryways, and other high-touch surfaces
- Maintain cleanliness standards for kitchens, break rooms, and gathering spaces
- Perform seasonal deep cleaning as needed
- Perform routine inspections of building systems and report concerns promptly
- Complete minor repairs including:
- Light bulb replacement
- Basic plumbing repairs
- Minor carpentry
- Door hardware adjustments
- Painting and patchwork
- Monitor HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems for issues requiring vendor support
- Coordinate with outside contractors and vendors when repairs exceed internal capability
- Assist with preventative maintenance schedules
- Maintain building entrances, sidewalks, and parking areas
- Remove snow and ice or coordinate snow removal services
- Assist with lawn care, landscaping, and seasonal exterior upkeep
- Monitor outdoor lighting and security of grounds
- Remove debris and ensure safe pathways for staff, parishioners, and visitors
- Set up and break down rooms for meetings, liturgies, receptions, and events
- Arrange tables, chairs, equipment, and supplies based on event needs
- Support weddings, funerals, sacramental celebrations, and parish events as needed
- Ensure spaces are restored to operational condition after events
- Open and/or secure buildings according to schedule, this includes opening and or closing the cathedral ensuring all lights are off.
- Conduct regular walkthroughs to ensure safety and security
- Identify and report hazards, unsafe conditions, or security concerns immediately
- Support emergency response procedures as needed
- Ensure compliance with safety policies and building regulations
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- 2–5 years of custodial, facilities, maintenance, or building operations experience preferred
- General knowledge of cleaning methods, maintenance tools, and minor repair techniques
- Ability to safely use cleaning chemicals, power equipment, and maintenance tools
- Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability
- Valid driver’s license preferred

Schedule may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, holy days, and special events depending on operational needs. Flexibility is required to support ministry and facility operations.
