Maintenance Technician

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under limited supervision, the Maintenance Technician works independently or as part of a team, responsible for the maintenance and repair of library buildings, grounds, and equipment.

The Maintenance Technician exercises independent judgement and decision making to safely perform their assigned duties within established policies, procedures, and guidelines.

This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by the Washington Public Employees Association/UFCW local 365.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED, plus three years' experience independently executing skilled full-time work in building and grounds maintenance. Successful completion of a certified, related course of study desired.

A valid Washington state driver's license, a safe driving record, and three years of driving experience are required to drive a library-owned vehicle for library business.

As part of the hiring process, candidates will complete a Job Candidate Assessment Test related to the duties of position. The selected candidate will complete pre-employment fitness for duty exam.

Employees regularly scheduled 20 or more hours per week are eligible to participate in our medical, dental, vision, basic life, AD&D, long term disability insurance plans, health reimbursement arrangement (HRA), as well as our employee assistance program. Additionally, full-time employees earn 15 days of vacation leave, 13 days of sick leave, and 1 personal day each year.

Offers to new employees are expected to be between $26.54-$29.00 depending on required and relevant experience and in alignment with internal equity.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Any of the following duties may be performed. These examples are not necessarily performed by all incumbents, however, and do not include all specific tasks an incumbent may be expected to perform.

DUTIES:

  • Maintain library owned and leased buildings, facilities, and grounds to include periodic corrective and preventive maintenance activities to maintain building and grounds cleanliness and durability.
  • Maintain building systems, stairs, gutters and downspouts, water heaters, etc. as needed. Perform repairs to fences, gates, walls, and/or walkways.
  • Safely use, maintain, and repair hand and power tools, and specialized equipment.
  • Perform various skilled electrical, lighting, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, painting, and ground care functions.
  • Perform troubleshooting and/or repair electrical light fixtures, switches, and outlets.
  • Monitor the work of contracted services to ensure compliance with service agreement and work quality consistent with Library standards and expectations.
  • Participate in facilities remodeling and repair projects.
  • Perform plumbing tasks such as faucet repairs or replacement, toilet repair, plunging, and using a snake or other equipment to clear clogs.
  • Perform general appliance repairs and/or replacement.
  • May on occasion handle and safely dispose of bio-hazardous materials.
  • Maintain walkways for safety (free of debris, ice, and for function).
  • Maintain the safety and cleanliness of library vehicles. Conduct visual inspections to ensure vehicles are in good working condition, keep the interior of vehicle clean of any debris.
  • Adhere to all traffic laws and safety regulations.
  • Assist with moving furniture and set-up for library-sponsored activities.
  • Transport, assemble, and install equipment, furniture, boxes, and shelving at various library locations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Knowledge and ability to use a variety of hand tools, power tools, and equipment such as tractors and riding lawn mowers.
  • Knowledge of seasonal maintenance requirements.
  • Ability to prioritize workload to meet goals and deadlines.
  • Ability to perform skilled electrical, lighting, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, painting, and grounds care duties requiring the ability to problem-solve difficult issues.
  • Ability to use maintenance and cleaning equipment and methods.
  • Ability to use cleaning chemicals, cleaning agents, disinfectants, sanitizers, degreasers, and lubricants safely.
  • Knowledge and ability to safely dispose of chemical materials.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Ability to push, pull and maneuver objects.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and courteous working relationships with staff and the public.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills with a diverse.
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical and safety instructions, warnings, and other written materials.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment.
  • Ability to use initiative and independent judgment in a variety of situations related to the duties of the position.
