The Custodian III performs highly complex (senior level) custodial work, including cleaning, sanitizing, and inspecting state supported living center buildings and resident homes. The position requires coordinating housekeeping services in a residential setting and providing backup to other custodians as needed, all under limited supervision with substantial initiative.

- Attends work regularly, may be required to work a specific shift schedule or a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime; may serve in on‑call status as needed.
- Maintains cleaning supplies, chemicals, equipment, records usage, ensures proper maintenance and performs minor repairs; restocks supplies.
- Coordinates and performs cleaning, dusting, and disinfecting of restrooms, office surfaces, programming areas, residents’ homes and bedrooms; collects and disposes of trash regularly.
- Ensures all resident homes/units meet or exceed minimum cleanliness, health and safety, and infection control standards; inspects buildings, identifies problems, and ensures follow‑up.
- Assists the Custodian Manager with safety and infection control program; oversees Custodians I and II; provides training and coaching; participates in disaster response or continuity operations.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of cleaning techniques and procedures (dusting, sweeping, mopping).
- Knowledge of floor stripping and waxing.
- Knowledge of restroom and shower stall cleaning and disinfecting.
- Knowledge of inventory control principles and methods.
- Skill in using custodial materials, chemicals, and equipment.
- Skill in using and maintaining building maintenance tools and equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to stay on task and complete work timely.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods.
- Ability to work harmoniously with co‑workers and patients.
- Ability to work irregular hours.
Must possess a valid Texas driver license within 90 days of hire. Applicants with an out‑of‑state license must provide an original certified driving record. Eligible driving record is required per HHSC Fleet Management policy.
Initial Screening Criteria- Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent (preferred).
- At least six (6) months paid experience in custodial/housekeeping work (required).
- One (1) year experience working with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities or mental health disorders (preferred).
- Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and HHS LEIE.
- Males between the ages of 18 – 25 must register with the Selective Service.
- All employees are subject to random drug testing.
- Flexibility in work hours may be required; overtime, extended hours, weekends and holidays are required.
