SUNY Suffolk is searching for a full-time (12-month), Assistant Director of Plant Operations beginning immediately on the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood, NY. Suffolk County Community College is an open admissions institution committed to serving a diverse student population in a variety of degree and career programs.
The Assistant Director of Plant Operations reports to the Director of Plant Operations on the Michael J. Grant Campus and is primarily responsible for supervision of custodial and oversight of the building mechanical staff.
Responsibilities- Supervises, schedules and assigns work to custodial and maintenance staff performing building maintenance and cleaning projects; inspects work in progress and completed work for compliance with specifications. Reviews work orders submitted by employees and schedules work to be completed.
- Works collaboratively with Central Facilities to execute campus projects.
- Maintains records including work orders, equipment, and supply records, and employee records. Reviews, codes and approves time cards in accordance with college policies.
- Interviews and recommends FT & PT custodial and maintenance mechanic staff for hire based on campus need.
- Counsels and mentors in-house staff.
- Provides training and on-the-job guidance on the proper methods, techniques, tools and equipment and safety precautions to be observed by staff involved in renovation, repair and maintenance of buildings.
- Conducts inspections of buildings, identifies maintenance and custodial needs, and communicates larger scale needs to the Director of Plant Operations.
- Receives emergency maintenance calls; conducts on site review of emergency; establishes work priorities and assigns employees to accomplish necessary repairs. Has on-call hours.
- Serves as a first supervisory responder and escalates issues as necessary to the attention of the Campus Executive Dean.
- Recommends budgetary considerations and ensures budgetary compliance. Consistently communicates budgetary considerations.
- Manages purchase requests and ensures budgetary compliance in congruence with communications and protocols from the Campus Business Service office.
- Works with faculty, student and campus administrative committees to facilitate campus/college programs.
- Assists with the planning and implementation or arrangements for special programs for business, industry and local community groups.
- Prepares summer schedule for building and classroom upgrades, including but not limited to flooring scrubbing, polishing & waxing of labs, art rooms and faculty offices.
- Order and schedule regular maintenance of custodial equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Campus Executive Dean.
- Prioritize and lead work on multiple projects.
- Demonstrate strong communication, computer, and analytical skills.
An Associate Degree or 60 credits toward degree, and 10 years in a leadership position overseeing mechanical maintenance and/or ground operations with at least 3 years of experience in the daily maintenance of a large complex facility.
OR
In lieu of an Associate Degree, at least 15 years in a leadership position overseeing mechanical maintenance and/or ground operations with at least 3 years of experience in the daily maintenance of a large complex facility.
Preferred QualificationsPrevious maintenance experience in an educational environment. Experience with Civil Service is strongly preferred. Experience with the supervision of a unionized workforce.
Special NotesThis position has been deemed essential for the operation of the college. As such, this incumbent will be required to report to work and schedule adequate staffing in the event of inclement weather, maintenance emergencies, and unplanned events that may impede the standard operations of the college.
